Stevenson Rises in U.S. News Rankings
Stevenson is ranked No. 6 in Illinois and No. 155 in the country in the annual U.S. News and World Report rankings released today. SHS is once again the highest-ranked open-enrollment school in the state, behind five selective-enrollment institutions in Chicago: Payton College Prep, Northside College Prep, Lane Tech, Whitney Young and Jones College Prep. U.S. News ranked 17,245 public high schools this year.
Stevenson also is ranked No. 71 nationally in the U.S. News STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) rankings, which is based primarily on participation levels and success on Advanced Placement science and mathematics exams.
Last year, Stevenson was ranked seventh in the state, No. 199 nationally, and No. 97 in STEM. This link outlines the U.S. News rankings methodology.
Math Students Earn $5K at National Math Contest
Stevenson competed in the 14th annual MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge national finals Monday in New York City. Matthew Jalnos, Joey Rivkin, Tony Tan, Josh Tsai and Angela Zhang earned $5,000 as one of the five team finalists. Mathematics teacher Paul Kim is the team’s coach. The winner of the $20,000 grand prize was High Technology High School from Lincroft, N.J.
This was the third consecutive year Stevenson has reached the finals of the M3 Challenge, a national competition in which students employ their math skills to address real-world problems. This year’s challenge called on teams to develop two mathematical models addressing substance use and abuse. The first model had to predict the spread of nicotine use due to vaping over the next 10 years and compare vaping to cigarette use. The second model had to simulate the likelihood that a given individual will use a given substance, taking into account social influence and characteristic traits as well as characteristics of the drug itself, and predict how many high school seniors will use the substances. Senior Reaches TOC Semifinals Again
Senior Sydney Glickson reached the Congressional Debate semifinals for the second straight year at the annual Tournament of Champions last weekend at the University of Kentucky. The TOC is the nation’s top high school competition. Sydney qualified for the tournament in each of her final three years of high school. Also competing in Kentucky was junior Dylan Hu
Final ARTalk Set for Thursday Night
Chicago artist Nicole Gordon will talk about her work and her career during the last ARTalk of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Visiting Artist Gallery in the West Building. Postsecondary Counselors to Speak at Conference
Postsecondary counselors Sara English and Dan Miller will join a colleague from Libertyville High School in leading a discussion about college application essay writing Wednesday at the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling annual conference at Illinois State University. The pair will be joined by Amy Belstra to talk about the various types of essays students may encounter, and how to help them through the brainstorming and editing process. On Thursday, Miller will join April Ponte of Oswego High School and Roberto Suarez of Homewood-Flossmoor High School for a session on “Insta-Anxiety.” They will explore the link between cell phone usage and teenage anxiety among high school students.
Exams and Stress
Stevenson‘s Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, Dr. Cristina Cortesi, will share regular reflections during the school year in the Daily Digest. For more information on Dr. Cortesi and the substance abuse prevention program, visit her web page.
With AP and final exams just around the corner, it is an opportune time to have a conversation with your teen about managing stress. While it is important for them to reach their academic goals, it is critically important that they learn strategies to prevent and cope with stress as well. Parents should consider encouraging their teens to eat well, get adequate sleep and exercise, plan ahead to set study time limits in order to take breaks to do things that make them happy, set realistic goals, and maintain open communication about how they are feeling. Boys Water Polo Team Eyes Eighth Straight State Trip
The SHS boys water polo team is seeking its eighth straight trip to the Illinois High School Association state tournament. One of the key players for the Patriots is goalkeeper Alex Mitchell, one of nine sophomores on the 17-man varsity roster. Jon Kerr wrote about Alex for Pioneer Press. Stevenson has a home game Wednesday against Naperville North, then closes out the regular season with a quadrangular meet on Saturday. The Patriots are the top seed in the Buffalo Grove Sectional, and will play in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 9.

AP Government Students, “Cram for the Exam” Saturday
Taking the AP Government exam? The “2 Teachers,” Mr. Larsen and Mr. Conneen, will be leading their 11th annual “Cram for the Exam” at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4 on C-SPAN. The AP Government exam is new this year, so this year’s “Cram for the Exam” might be the most important one yet.
Advanced Choir, Patriot Singers Auditions This Week
Do you like to sing? Want to develop your vocal skills and have a great time performing and participating in fun events? Placement auditions for Stevenson’s advanced choir classes, Advanced Choir and Patriot Singers, are happening Wednesday through Saturday. Patriot Superstore Closed Friday, Monday
The Patriot Superstore will be closed on Friday and Monday, and will reopen Tuesday morning. Because of the closing, in-person ticket sales for the Spring Dance Concert and the Spring One-Act Plays will end on Thursday.
Spanish Club is hosting its last event of the year with Taste of México after school Wednesday in Room 2618. All students are invited to try small portions of authentic, Mexican foods and enjoy Spanish guitar music.
