Alumnus Injured in Crash Not Expected to Survive
Stevenson alumnus Paul Miller (Class of 2004), a Des Plaines firefighter, was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on Sunday and is not expected to survive. Miller’s mother, Sally Miller, runs Stevenson’s Patriot Superstore. She wrote the following on Facebook Tuesday:
“Today with a very heavy heart we are using social media to notify our many friends of a very horrific motorcycle accident that happened on Easter Sunday involving our eldest son Pauly,” she wrote. “We are still asking for prayers of healing for Pauly, his friends and family. Pauly is going to be leaving us physically but will be living through others as he has wished to donate all possible organs. Pauly will forever live on through the memories we have of him. We must continue on to have prayers over the next few days as tests are run and recipients are found for his organs.”
Paul, 33, was riding east on Old McHenry Road in Hawthorn Woods around 10 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a car driven by a 77-year-old man from Florida, who was pulling out of the parking lot at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
About 100 people, firefighters, family and friends, attended a brief ceremony at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville Tuesday afternoon, raising a “Gift of Hope” flag in Miller’s honor. He spent 10 years with the Prospect Heights Fire Department before joining the Des Plaines and McHenry Township fire departments. Paul’s brother, Donald, also was a firefighter for Prospect Heights, and their father, Paul Sr., is a longtime employee for the Prospect Heights Public Works Department.
Late Arrival on Thursday
Stevenson will operate on a late-arrival schedule Thursday to allow for staff development activities in the morning. Classes will begin at 10:30 a.m., and buses will begin their routes at 9:20. Click here for the late-arrival bell schedule.
8 Inducted Into National Dance Honor Society
Eight students were inducted into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts on Tuesday during a special ceremony before school. This year’s inductees are: Chloe Lucido, Ari Reinstein, Jorie Knysz, Allison Noronha, Elizabeth Noronha, Jessica Altenberg, Elena Rouse and Isabella Fontane. Also, Jessica and fellow seniors Jennifer Fairman, Allison Kalbhen, Amelia Lee, Isabella Stock and Zoe Warren were honored for graduating with NHSDA Honors.
Driver Ed Meeting for Parents, Students on Tuesday
The Driver Education Department will hold a special evening for students enrolled in Driver Education this summer or during the fall semester, and their parents and guardians, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The meeting for parents and guardians will be held in the Recital Hall portion of the Performing Arts Center, while students will meet in the Little Theater part of the PAC. Click here for details.
Chicago Painter to Close Visiting Artist Series
The Fine Arts Division’s 2018-19 Visiting Artist Series concludes with Chicago artist Nicole Gordon, whose oil paintings offer “dreamscapes” that reflect juxtapositions between the past and present, and the real and imagined. Her exhibition will be on display in the Visiting Artist Gallery beginning Friday through the end of the school year.
Gordon will talk about her work and her career during the last ARTalk of the year at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 2 at the Visiting Artist Gallery. Her presentation, sponsored by the Stevenson High School Foundation, is open to the public. Samples of her work also can be seen at her website, www.nicolegordon.com.
Pot, Vaping Among Next Facebook Live Topics
Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator Dr. Cristina Cortesi will be the guest on the next edition of Stevenson’s Facebook Live program, “Lunch With Jim,” at noon Thursday. Vaping, marijuana and alcohol will be covered, along with suggestions on how parents can talk with their students about staying safe and strong. Baseball
Stevenson 10, Mundelein 3: The Patriots (13-5, 6-2 North Suburban Conference) won their fourth consecutive game, recording 13 hits and stole eight bases while limiting the visiting Mustangs (10-8, 6-2) to four hits. Frank Carris, Jacob Rosenkranz and Chris Farina split pitching duties, striking out nine in seven innings and walking none. None of the MHS runs were earned. SHS trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, then strung together five straight hits and took a 3-2 lead. Ryan McElhinny singled home Michael D’Angelo (3-for-3, 3 runs) with the go-ahead run. The Patriots put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth, which included a two-run double from AJ Weine (2-for-3, 3 RBI), a two-run single from Chris (2-for-3, 2 RBI), and an RBI single from Nick Brueckert. Girls Soccer
Stevenson 1, Lake Zurich 0: Jenny Staten made nine saves to earn her 10th shutout of the year, and Gabi Nyc scored the game’s only goal in the first half for the host Patriots (12-1-2, 3-0 NSC) in the Stadium. Gabi’s goal came off an assist from Kalyssa VanZanten. SHS, which has won seven straight games, has surrendered only five goals in regulation this season. The Patriots are ranked third in the latest Chicagoland Soccer top 20, and fifth in the Daily Herald poll. - NFHS Network Replay
Girls Track and Field
Stevenson 129, Waukegan 17: Camille Clay won the shot put (35 feet, 8.5 inches) and discus (109 feet, 4.5 inches) as the Patriots captured every event in the home meet. Other winners in the field events included Kaitlyn Chan in the triple jump (31-7.5), Emma Potocki in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches) and Grace McGhee in the pole vault (8 feet). In the running events, the individual winners were Michelle Yu in the 3,200 meters (12:27.6), Natalie Dugaesescu in the 300-meter low hurdles (54.3), Miffy Tani in the 100 intermediate hurdles (17.5), Natalie Sinjaradze in the 100 (13.1), Kendall Roberts in the 800 (2:34.6), Lindsey Hendler in the 400 (1:04.1), Natalie Sorenson in the 1,600 (5:38.6) and Olga Piatkowska in the 200 (28.1). Stevenson also won the four relays: the 3,200 (10:55.3), 1,600 (4:40.7), 800 (1:54.0) and 400 (50.9).
Girls Badminton
Stevenson 18, New Trier 0: The Patriots’ consecutive match winning streak reached 43 with the victory in Winnetka. SHS (20-0) received a pair of convincing victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in matchups of 2018 state qualifiers. Defending state champions Emily Hu and Jenny Yang dispatched the Trevians’ top doubles duo, 21-5, 21-4. Shibani Ram, third in the state last spring, cruised to a 21-7, 21-2 victory. Shibani also teamed with Kaitlyn Lu for a 21-10, 21-7 win at No. 3 doubles. The other winning doubles tandems were 2018 state runners-up Benna Li and Jyotsna Harikrishna at No. 2 (21-7, 21-5), Julie Zhu and Thivya Sivarajah at No. 4 (21-7, 21-16), Megan Wei and Jasmine Zhang at No. 5 (21-13, 21-19), and Giuli Nagai and Veronica Liu at No. 6 (21-12, 21-12). Kaitlyn was a 21-5, 21-5 victor at No. 2 singles, followed by Jyotsna at No. 3 (21-5, 21-6), Emily at No. 4 (21-5, 21-0), Jenny at No. 5 (21-2, 21-3), Benna at No. 6 (21-6, 21-4), Megan at No. 7 (21-0, 21-16), Guili at No. 8 (21-5, 21-7), Thivya at No. 9 (21-8, 21-9), Jasmine at No. 10 (21-13, 21-13), Julie at No. 11 (21-19, 21-19) and Veronica at No. 12 (21-12, 21-8).
Softball
Libertyville 12, Stevenson 1: Elle Ruchim singled to break up the Wildcats’ no-hit bid with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, then scored on a double by Haley Barnes for the host Patriots (4-4, 2-2). Emily Freedman added a single in the seventh for Stevenson’s other hit. Libertyville improved to 13-7 overall and 7-1 in the NSC. - GameChanger.com, Daily Herald
Baseball Team to Play Under the Lights Friday
The varsity baseball team will take on St. Viator under the lights Friday at Benedictine University in Lisle. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Admission is $5. St. Viator is the alma mater of Stevenson head coach Nick Skala.

Diversity Council Forum on Current Events Friday
The annual Diversity Council Forum on current issues and events will be held from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Friday in Room 2104 and the Patriot Lobby. Topics to be discussed include marijuana legalization, immigration policy, gun control and affirmative action. The forum is intended to provide a safe space for students to these topics through well-articulated and well-researched opinions. Dr. Heller from the Communication Arts Division will be the guest speaker, and SHS students will serve as moderators.
Prom Bus Times on Saturday
Going to the Prom on Saturday? You must ride the bus to and from the event. Students need to arrive at Stevenson around 5 p.m. Saturday to board the buses. Students should park in lots D or E and walk through the school toward the Forum lobby by The Point. Buses will be departing from lot B, but cars will not be allowed to park in that lot. Buses depart at 5:30 p.m.
