Science Olympiad Team Wins State Title
Stevenson won its fourth Illinois Science Olympiad Division C state championship in the last seven years on Saturday at the University of Illinois, earning an automatic berth to the national tournament. SHS also won the state title in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
The Patriots edged perennial rival and two-time defending state champion New Trier by four points for the crown, with Naperville North third and 28 points back in the 50-school field. This marks the 11th consecutive year SHS has finished first or second in the state.
Stevenson won six of 23 events in the eight-and-a-half-hour competition, which tests knowledge, lab skills and engineering expertise. Three students were part of two winning events: Juniors Radha Patel and Anna Wang, and freshman Greycen Ren. Radha and Greycen combined to win the Anatomy and Physiology title, and Radha joined with sophomore Sneha Mohan to capture Mission Possible. Anna and sophomore Jared Machtinger won Geo Mapping, and she earned a second first with junior Erin Yuan in Water Quality. Greycen’s second title came in Herpetology with freshman Emily Liu. Stevenson’s other event-winning team was juniors Richard Yin and Shannon Kang in Forensics.
Since New Trier and Naperville North also won six events, the team championship hinged on overall results. Stevenson only had one of 23 events finish outside the top nine, and finished second, third or fourth in 12 events. Click here to see all of Stevenson’s results.
The Science Olympiad National Tournament will be held May 30-June 2 at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Junior Part of National Championship in D.C.
Junior Yael Lenga helped Hersey High School win the National Academic Bowl for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing on Sunday at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C.. She was one of three people on the team, which defeated the California School for the Deaf-Riverside for Hersey’s first title since 2007.
One-Person Art Shows Tuesday, Wednesday
Artwork by students in various upper-level visual arts courses will be on display during the annual One Person Shows in the Upper Forum and Room 2104 of the West Building during school hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. In addition, a public reception honoring the student-artists will take place from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday in Room 2104 and the Forum.
Statesman Garners Awards in Ball State Contest
Stevenson’s student newspaper, the Statesman, received the second-highest rating possible, and several students earned individual awards in Ball State University’s 64th annual J-Day contests. More than 500 entries were submitted from across the country.
The Statesman was one of five newspapers to earn an Excellent rating in the Division AA contest, which awarded Superior ratings for the top entries, followed by Excellent and Honorable Mention.
Nine students garnered the top honor, a Superior rating: The team of juniors Cheryl Chen and Nellie Maloney, and seniors Olivia Lamberti and Bella Schneider were honored in Personality Feature for their “American Identity” pieces, and Cheryl earned a second Superior in Cover Design with senior Chloe Myers for their “Hello...America” artwork. Other Superior recipients were sophomore Melissa Liu and junior Caimin Xi in News Story (“Born in the USA”), and sophomore Ojasvi Saxena and junior Emily Lu in Sports Story (“Hate Speech”).
Seven received Excellent ratings: Chloe and Cheryl in Cover Design (“The Buzz”); Nellie and junior Anjini Grover (News Story, “Lincoln Goes Green”); Anjini and junior Dylan Hu (News Story, “CamBridge to Success”); senior Ellie Baden (Opinion Story, “Standing up to Anti-Semitism”); and senior Brare Thompson (Sports Story, “Bench Support”).
Honorable Mention went to: Ellie and junior Janice Lee (Feature Story, “Ease A”); Caimin (Opinion Story, “Patriot Pride”); junior Stephanie Levitt (News Story, “Time of Transition”); Melissa and senior Adele Lee (Review, “Netflix”); Melissa and Caimin (Multi-Page Design, “Born in the USA”); junior Ben Bowler (Multi-Page Design, “Teen Dating”); Cheryl (Editorial, “Sex Ed”); senior Kendall Roberts (Editorial, “Dishonesty”); junior Trisha Patel (Sports Story, “Power Play”); junior Alex Gergova (Sports Page Design, “Volleyball”); Alex and sophomore Katie Lee (Alternative Story Design, “Winter Sports”); senior Alisa Mufti (Alternative Story Design, “S-Factor”); and Chloe and Cheryl (Cover Design, “Modern Romance”).

Girls Soccer
Stevenson at Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Classic: The Patriots (8-1-2) upset highly-ranked Naperville North, 4-2, on penalty kicks in the semifinals, advancing to tonight’s championship game against New Trier at 7 o’clock. Senior keeper Jenny Staten made six saves in the first 100 minutes of the game, which was tied 1-1 after two overtimes. She then stopped one of the four Husky penalty kick attempts, and another went wide. Stevenson, meanwhile, connected on all four of its penalty kicks, from Kayla Constabileo, Gabi Nyc, Kalyssa VanZanten and Kristin Hill. Naperville North (5-3-1), ranked No. 8 by Chicagoland Soccer, led 1-0 until Kalyssa tied the contest with a corner kick that curled off a defender and into the back of the net in the 66th minute. - ChicagolandSoccer.org

Stevenson at Deerfield Quad: The Patriots swept their three matches, defeating Lake Forest (5-2), Fremd (6-1) and Deerfield (7-0), improving to 6-1 this season. Zach Kim and Eric Perkowski won all three matches they played. Zach was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles against Lake Forest, posted a 6-0, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles versus Fremd, and joined Arjun Sheelvanth to record a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles against Deerfield. Eric won at No. 1 singles against Fremd (6-2, 6-4) and Deerfield (6-1, 6-1), and at No. 2 versus Lake Forest (6-3, 6-2). The No. 2 doubles team of Payton Adkisson and Daniel Tulchinskiy won all three of its matches, topping Lake Forest (6-0, 6-0), Fremd (6-0, 6-2) and Deerfield (6-2, 6-4). Also going 3-0 was the No. 3 doubles duo of Andy Dong and Thomas Gong. They beat Lake Forest (6-4, 6-4), Fremd (6-1, 6-1) and Deerfield (6-1, 6-0). Kevin Fei and Gabriel Visotsky won both matches they played at No. 4 doubles, defeating Lake Forest (6-4, 6-2) and Deerfield (6-3, 6-2).
Boys Volleyball
Stevenson at Lake County Invitational: The Patriots finished second to Lake Forest for county honors. SHS (14-3) beat Antioch, 25-9, 25-16, and Waukegan, 25-9, 25-18, before falling to the Scouts in the title match, 25-20, 25-17. Gavin Meng led Stevenson with six kills against Lake Forest and eight versus Waukegan, while Thomas Finn had a match-high eight against Antioch. Justin Ross had 14 kills in the three matches, and also had two solo blocks against Antioch. Will Sorenson went 119-of-120 setting with 56 assists.

Stevenson at DeSmet Jesuit Invitational: The Patriots completed their journey to St. Louis by winning one of three games. SHS defeated Kirkwood, 11-9, before falling to Parkway West in two overtimes, 8-7, and St. Louis University High, 8-4. Mark Holzer led the Pats with four goals against Kirkwood, Drew Wangard’s trio of goals was tops versus Parkway West, and Filip Mihajlovic had two goals against SLUH. Deerfield 15, Stevenson 4: Maggie Trotter was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Elle Ruchim finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, and Haley Barnes hit a solo homer and singled for the host Patriots. - Daily Herald
Boys Gymnastics
Stevenson at Ken Scorza Invitational: At York, the Patriots placed sixth among eight teams with a 114.100 score. Jack White finished third in floor exercise (9.1) and vault (8.8). He tied for 14th on horizontal bar (6.1), was 15th on parallel bars (7.1), and tied for 15th on still rings (7.3). Other top-20 finishes for SHS came from Tyler Ehlen on pommel horse (tied for 17th, 5.9), and Aaron Rudloff in floor exercise (18th, 7.8) and vault (tied for 19th, 6.9). Stevenson at Lake County Invitational: The Patriots opened the tournament with victories over Grayslake North (25-16, 25-20) and Highland Park (25-13, 25-19). Justin Ross had eight kills and five block assists against Grayslake, while Gavin Meng recorded nine kills against Highland Park. Samuel Epstein made 16 digs in the two matches, while Will Sorenson was 94-of-95 setting with 49 assists.
Girls Water Polo
Stevenson 10, New Trier 1: Lauren Maloney scored five goals as the Patriots (16-0) won their 49th consecutive game. Eleanor Michaud and Shreya Sreedhar each had two goals, and Maddy O’Donnell also scored for SHS, which led 3-0 at halftime then scored six times in the third quarter. Anna Mossakowski made eight saves.
Boys Water Polo
Stevenson at DeSmet Jesuit Invitational: In St. Louis, Nate Pedigo scored two goals in each game as the Patriots opened the tournament with a 12-8 win over Ladue and a 7-5 decision over Lindbergh. Mark Holzer, Nik Ebeling and Filip Mihajlovic all had two goals in the Ladue game, while Nik, Beno Maya, Grant Huey, Drew Wangard and Sammy Maya scored once versus Lindbergh. - Illpolo.com

Stevenson 10, Carmel 8: The Patriots rallied from a four-goal deficit to overcome the Corsairs in the Stadium. SHS trailed 6-2 in the first half and was able to close the gap to 6-3 at halftime. Grayslake North 18, Stevenson 17: The Knights scored nine runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the walkoff win. The game was moved to SHS due to unplayable field conditions in Grayslake. Haley Barnes smacked two home runs during the Patriots’ nine-run first inning, and drove in six runs in the game. Maggie O’Brien, who also homered, went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Elle Ruchim was 2-for-4 with three RBI, Anna Fossier went 3-for-5 and Emily Freedman finished 2-for-4. - Daily Herald
Spirit Revolution Tryouts Start Time Change
The start time for this week’s Spirit Revolution tryouts for incoming freshmen has changed. Tryouts will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, rather than 3:30, and will end at 6:30. Tryouts will take place in the Wood Commons.

Geography, Rotary Clubs Holding Trivia Night
The Rotary Youth Club and Geography Club will be co-hosting their first Trivia Night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday in Room 2104. Entry is $5, and pizza and snacks will be provided.
Guitar Course Auditions This Week
The Stevenson guitar program will be holding auditions for Guitar Techniques 2 and Patriot Guitar Ensemble every day this week after school. No audition is necessary for Guitar Techniques 1. If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Mr. Zimmerman or stop by the Guitar Room (Room 2200).
The next meeting of FIRE (Fostering Intercultural Respect and Empowerment) will take place at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in Room 2600. All are welcome to attend.
Breakfast with Books will meet from 7:45-8:20 a.m. Tuesday in the upper ILC. All students are welcome. The only requirement is a love for reading!
Thursday is the deadline for seniors to turn in their permission slip to attend the College of Lake County New Student Orientation field trip on Wednesday, April 24. There are 20 spots available. During the field trip, students will receive a campus tour, meet with an academic counselor, and register for classes. Visit the College Career Center (Room 1123) to pick up a permission slip.
