Students Head to NYC for M3 Challenge Finals
Five students are heading to New York City this weekend to prepare for Monday’s finals of the 14th annual MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge. Junior Josh Tsai and seniors Angela Zhang, Matthew Jalnos, Joey Rivkin and Tony Tan are one of five student teams that will compete for the $20,000 grand prize. The Stevenson quintet is guaranteed to walk away with at least $5,000. SHS won the M3 Challenge in 2017.
Stevenson’s team earned its third consecutive trip to the M3 Challenge finals based on a mathematically based solution to two specific questions related to substance use and abuse. They and nearly 880 other entrants had to devise the solution in 14 hours during the first weekend of March.

North Suburban Art Winners Announced
Eleven students received awards at Thursday’s North Suburban Conference Art Show at Zion-Benton High School: Natalie Wess (digital photo), Kitty Zeng (ink), Bekka Goldstein (digital drawing), Christina Wade (digital photography), Jasmin Lin (mixed media), Diana Struif (metals and jewelry), Sophia Li (mixed media), Jenna Moy (oil paint), Joycelyn Guo (oil paint), Piper Starr (mixed media). The Artist's Choice award went to Kirsten Thomas (graphite).
String Parents Holding Online Auction
The String Parents Association is holding an online auction through Monday, May 6. Special deals at several area businesses are available for bid. Click here to see details and auction items. Winners will be announced at the Orchestra Awards Concert on Tuesday, May 7.
Choral Guild Fundraiser Monday
The Choral Guild will hold a fundraiser from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Corner Bakery, 445 E. Townline Rd., in Vernon Hills.

Boys Tennis
Stevenson 8, Warren 0: The Patriots (11-1) moved a step closer to finishing their North Suburban Conference schedule unbeaten with the victory at the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex. SHS is 5-0 in conference action, and finishes its league slate Tuesday at home against Lake Forest. Stevenson won every contest against the Blue Devils in straight sets to extend its victory streak to 10 matches. The Pats received singles decisions from Eric Perkowski at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0), Zach Kim at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0) and Nicholas Stec at No. 3 (6-0, 6-3). In doubles, Payton Adkisson and Daniel Tulchinskiy posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1, followed by Arjun Sheelvanth and Ozzie Viswanathan (6-1, 6-0), Thomas Gong and Andy Dong (6-1, 6-3), Gabriel Visotsky and Kevin Fei (6-0, 6-1) and Christopher Yang and Kiran Mohan (6-1, 6-0).
Girls Soccer
Stevenson 1, Mundelein 0: Gracie Wingfield scored off a 70-yard counter attack by Kalyssa VanZanten in the second half for the game’s only goal as the visiting Patriots (13-1-2, 4-0) won their eighth straight game. Jenny Staten made nine saves and earned her 11th shutout of the season. The win was accompanied by news that Stevenson earned the No. 1 seed in the 17-team Buffalo Grove Sectional. SHS is the top seed, followed by Libertyville and Fremd.
Girls Track and Field
Stevenson at Lake County Invitational: Two relay teams featuring Jade Cadichon, Hailey Peterson, Raeden Mays and Jordan Tollison led the Patriots in Lake Zurich. The four finished second in the 800-meter relay (1:48.17) and third in the 400-meter relay (49.91). Natalie Sorenson placed fourth in the 3,200 (11:05.68), while Camille Clay was fourth in shot put (36-8) and fifth in discus (109-5.5). Ella O’Neal took fifth in shot put (34-8). Jade and Raeden finished seventh (13.16) and eighth (13.17), respectively, in the 100. Mia Mikolajczak was seventh in the 300 hurdles (50.27) and eighth in the 100 hurdles (17.20). Miffy Tani placed ninth in the 100 hurdles (17.38) and Emma Potocki tied for ninth in high jump (4-9). Lindsey Hendler was 10th in the 400 (1:04.83) and Kendall Roberts finished 10th in the 1,600 (5:23.92). Stevenson tied Warren for sixth in the team standings. - Official Results, Daily Herald
Softball
Stevenson 17, Waukegan 2 (4 inn.): Haley Barnes went 3-for-3 with two doubles and a home run, driving in five runs for the host Patriots (6-10). Her three-run homer ended the game in the bottom of the fourth. Haley scored four times, as did Elle Ruchim, who also went 3-for-3. She tripled and also stole three bases. Other perfect days at the plate came from Maggie Trotter, who was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs scored, and Emily Freedman, who was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs. Maggie O’Brien hit a triple and had two RBI, Lexi Gitler doubled home a run, and Reagan Koenigs also knocked in a run. Haley was the winning pitcher, giving up one hit and striking out nine in four innings. - GameChanger.com, Daily Herald
Baseball
Buffalo Grove 4, Stevenson 3: The Patriots (13-6) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and had the winning run on second base, but saw their four-game win streak come to an end at the hands of the visiting Bison (13-6). Michael D’Angelo and Zach Taylor each knocked in a run with a single, and Brandon Ward had an RBI groundout in the final inning. Jake Surane was 3-for-4 on the day with a run scored and a stolen base. Starting pitcher Eli Fishbein gave up only one earned run and four hits in four-and-a-third innings, striking out four. - GameChanger.com, Daily Herald
Ambrose Earns Coach of the Year Honor
Stevenson boys basketball coach Pat Ambrose has been selected for a Class 4A District 6 Boys High School Coach of the Year Award from the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Ambrose guided the Patriots to a 27-6 record, the fourth-highest win total in program history. SHS won its seventh consecutive North Suburban Conference championship, plus regional and sectional titles. This is the fourth time Ambrose has been honored by the ICBA.
Wimer Taking Water Polo Streak in Stride
No one has won more games in Illinois girls water polo history than Jeff Wimer, so he’s taking the Patriots’ 55-game winning streak in stride. “I don’t look at how many wins we have in a row,” he told Journal and Topics reporter Dion Martorano recently. “I look at how we are playing. Seriously, 50 straight wins is great, but my concern is how they are playing and how they are progressing through the season.” Stevenson has been dominant this year, outscoring its opponents 318-88. Wimer has 658 wins in his 26-year career, with 485 coming during 19 years at Stevenson. His teams have won three of the last four state championships, including two in a row.
This Weekend on NFHS Network
Tonight’s varsity boys lacrosse game against Lakes will be streamed live from the Stadium on Stevenson’s NFHS Network page. The game begins at 6:30. On Saturday, the junior varsity boys volleyball invitational games will be shown live from the Sports Center beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the Allied Soccer game against Antioch at 1 p.m. will be streamed live from the Stadium (weather permitting).
