SHS Excels at National History Bowl, Bee
Stevenson walked away with several awards at the ninth annual national championships for the National History Bowl and Bee, and United States History Bee, in Arlington, Va., over the weekend.
The U.S. History Bee tests individual knowledge of American history, while the National History Bowl and Bee covers historical events throughout the world.
The varsity History Bowl team of juniors Meehir Dixit, David Holmquist and Govind Prabhakar and sophomore Arjun Nageswaran finished fifth in the nation on Saturday. In the junior varsity competition, Stevenson’s team of sophomores Aniket Dixit, Allen Guo, Denis Selyuzhitsky and freshman Anish Arora placed eighth. The National History Bowl is a buzzer-based history quiz competition for teams.
In the individual events on Friday, Govind earned fifth in the varsity U.S. History Bee while Arjun was runner-up in the JV U.S. History Bee. Govind also finished seventh in the International Geography Bee, which tests geography skills. Govind was a semifinalist in the varsity National History Bee while David was a quarterfinalist. Aniket, Arjun and Denis were quarterfinalists in the JV National History Bee.
This was the fifth consecutive year Stevenson has qualified for the National History Bowl and Bee. Last year, Govind, David, Meehir, Arjun and Grant Davis won the JV National History Bowl championship, and Govind also captured the JV National History Bee and JV U.S. History Bee titles.
Junior Selected for U.S. Physics Team
Junior Emily Lu has earned a place on the 20-member United States Physics Team for 2019. She qualified for the honor based on her score on the USA Physics Olympiad Exam given earlier this month. Emily will have the opportunity to compete at the U.S. Physics Team training camp May 28-June 8 at the University of Maryland. Five students will be selected at the camp to represent the United States at the 50th International Physics Olympiad July 7-15 in Israel.
Emily was one of seven Stevenson students who qualified for the USA Physics Olympiad Exam, which was open to the top 400 physics students in the country. The other qualifiers were seniors Joey Rivkin and George Wang, juniors Advait Deoskar, Dylan Hu and Joshua Tsai, and sophomore Jared Machtinger. Joey and Dylan also qualified for the exam in 2018.
Two students have made the U.S. Physics Team in the past five years: Jason Lu (Class of 2017) was a member of the team in 2015 and 2016, and Richard Zhu (Class of 2014) was chosen in 2014.
Kendall Roberts Fourth at State Journalism Contest
Senior Kendall Roberts finished fourth in the Editorial Writing category at the Illinois High School Association State Journalism Competition on Friday at Heartland Community College in Normal. Senior Aniket Nuthalapati competed in both Copy Editing and Headline Writing. Sophomore Grace (Joo Eun) Kwon competed in Yearbook Copy Writing.
40th Annual Consortium Art Fest on Tuesday
The 40th Annual Consortium 125 Art Fest will be held Tuesday in the Field House. The annual show is an exhibition of K-12 student artwork from SHS and its sender schools. A public reception will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Student-made ice cream bowls will be available for purchase at the public reception.
Students Helping Soldiers Plans Spring Clothing Drive
Students Helping Soldiers will hold its spring clothing drive beginning Wednesday and running through Wednesday, May 15. All donations will be delivered to The Veterans Closet in North Chicago for veterans and active duty military families. Collection bins will be available at the Point, Sports Center, and Field House entrances.
Funeral Arrangements for 2004 Alumnus
Funeral arrangements have been announced for SHS alumnus Paul Miller (Class of 2004), who died last week from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Oehler Funeral Home, 2099 Miner St., in Des Plaines (at the corner of Northwest Highway and Rand Road). The funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at 12pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Arlington Heights. Girls Badminton
Stevenson at North Suburban Conference Championships: The Patriots rolled to the league championship, winning all 12 singles flights and all six doubles flights over two days at Warren. SHS won every match it played, going 12-0 in doubles and 24-0 in singles. Stevenson posted a team score of 54, ahead of runner-up Libertyville (32.5) and four other schools.
Girls Water Polo
Stevenson at Hudsonville (Mich.) Invitational: The Patriots (26-0) completed a sweep of their four-game, two-day road trip, extending the team’s winning streak to 59 consecutive games. SHS defeated Michigan’s ninth-ranked school, Zeeland, 15-4, and another Michigan squad, Forest Hills, 13-3. Goalies Anna Mossakowski and Maggie Bauwens played one half in each game, with Anna making five saves in each contest and Maggie stopping 11 shots overall. Lauren Maloney scored four goals in each game, while Eleanor Michaud had seven in the two games. Anna Gates and Kalista Tapas tallied four goals overall. Anne Baldino and Shreya Sreedhar each had two goals, while Maddy O’Donnell also scored.
Boys Water Polo
Stevenson hosted SHS Varsity Classic: The fourth-ranked Patriots concluded the two-day tournament with wins over Lincoln Way East, 15-11, and No. 7 Loyola, 14-8. Dima Kobets led SHS with six goals in each contest. David Gorin had two goals in the Loyola game, while Drew Wangard, Sammy Maya, Mark Holzer and Jacob Whiting also scored. Stevenson 3, Lakes 0: Gracie Wingfield, Emma Ramagnano and Lily Mahdavian scored goals as the host Patriots (14-1-2) won their ninth straight game and posted their seventh straight shutout. Alyssa Bende, Kristin Hill and Kalyssa VanZanten each recorded an assist. Jenny Staten and Arushi Nair split time in goal, and each made three saves.

Stevenson 7, St. Viator 2: Isaiah Hart hit a solo home run leading off the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, and the Patriots (14-6) went on to score four more times under the lights at Benedictine University. Isaiah finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Zach Taylor hit a two-run double in the inning and Ryan McElhinny (2-for-3) had an RBI single. Michael D’Angelo was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Starting pitcher Hayden Brotz went four innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out four. Stevenson at Hudsonville (Mich.) Invitational: The Patriots improved to 24-0 and stretched their consecutive-game winning streak to 57 with victories over two Michigan schools. SHS beat second-ranked Hudsonville, 13-8, and seventh-ranked Jenison, 14-7. In the victory over Hudsonville, the game was tied 1-1 after one quarter, and Stevenson held an 8-6 lead after three periods. Lauren Maloney scored four goals, while Eleanor Michaud, Kalista Tapas and Shreya Sreedhar each had three. Anna Mossakowski made 10 saves. The Patriots took a 8-0 halftime lead against Jenison. After the Wildcats rallied in the third quarter to make it 9-4, SHS removed any doubt with five goals in the final period. Maggie Bauwens made seven saves and Lauren had three goals. Hanna Cloeter, Maddie Meirhaege and Val Zlotnikova had two goals apiece.

Stevenson hosted SHS Varsity Classic: The Patriots beat Palatine, 17-11, before falling to Fenwick, 11-9, on the first day of the tournament. Dima Kobets led SHS with five goals against Palatine and two versus the Friars. - Illpolo.com
Boys Track and Field
Stevenson at 54th Spartan Relays: At Glenbrook North, the Patriots won four relays and Maema Njongmeta captured the discus competition, leading SHS to a fourth-place finish overall. Stevenson amassed 71 points, behind Deerfield (104), Glenbrook South (87) and Lake Zurich (83.5). Maema had a winning toss of 171 feet, 7 inches in the discus. The Patriots won three traditional relays, the 1,600 (3:33.12), 800 (1:32.34) and 400 (44.18), and also claimed the Sprint MR (1:38.34). Stevenson also was third in the Throwers 400 relay (50.99). In field events, Dan Erdenetsogt finished fourth in discus (148-9), Anand Batbaatar was fourth in shot put (51-10), and Mark Helwig tied for ninth in pole vault (9-6). - Official Results

Stevenson at Pitchford 32 Invitational: The annual state tournament preview was cut short by Saturday’s bad weather. Zach Kim and Eric Perkowski won their first three singles matches at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, to reach the semifinals. - Daily Herald

Mental Health Month Kickoff Week
Mind Your Mind, Stevenson’s mental health awareness club, is hosting a kickoff week starting today for Mental Health Awareness Month, which is May. MYM will be selling T-shirts to raise money for Hope For The Day, a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention founded by a Stevenson alumnus. Shirts are $10. If you would like to order a shirt, turn in this order form with cash or check by Friday to Ms. Wrona or Ms. Lehman. Each day this week, the club will have a different theme with related activities. Here is the lineup:
Today: Gratitude - Stop by Mind Your Mind’s booth during lunch periods to fill out a gratitude list to be entered into a raffle to win gift card prizes! You can also write a letter to a friend, and we will deliver it to him or her within the week.
Tuesday: Exercise - Join Zumba Club after school in Room 5044. Exercise promotes neural growth, reduces inflammation, and new activity patterns lead to feelings of calm and well being.
Wednesday: Music - Enjoy Mind Your Mind’s playlist during passing periods! Music elevates your mood and motivation and increases the efficiency of your brain processing.
Thursday: Relaxation and Meditation - Mind Your Mind will be hosting a relaxation and meditation session before school at 7:45 a.m. by the pond. If it rains, the session will be moved to Room 5044.
Friday: General Awareness - The club will be handing out free fruit snacks before school with stickers containing facts about mental health.
Pass On The Beat will be performing at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Patriot Lobby. Come hear these talented students!
The next meeting of FIRE (Fostering Intercultural Respect and Empowerment) will take place at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday in Room 2600. All are welcome to attend.
The Write Club’s open mic event wraps up Tuesday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Little Theater. This open mic will focus on spoken word poetry, and all students are welcome to watch. Be prepared to write your own spoken word poem. No experience necessary!
Diversity Council will be holding its Turkish Cultural Event after school until 5 p.m. on Tuesday in Room 1912. Presentations, food, music and more are planned.
In the Loop is meeting today after school in Room 7064. Don't know how to knit? Knot a problem! Club members will give you your first lesson.
Animal Welfare is having its end-of-year celebration Tuesday after school in Room 7064. The club will put the finishing touches on its guinea pig habitats and start making plans for next year. This will be the last meeting of the year, so don't miss it!
