Incoming Freshman Orientation Nights Begin

The next crop of incoming freshmen and their parents and guardians will be visiting Stevenson over the next two weeks for orientation evenings. The first session is tonight, the second is Thursday, and the final one is Wednesday, Jan. 16. Click here for more information.

UI Vocal Group with Four Alumni Coming to SHS

The University of Illinois a cappella group No Comment will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Performing Arts Center. Four Stevenson alumni are in the 15-member group: Jacob Singer and Johnny Barboza from the Class of 2017, and Elizabeth Meyer and Emily Lee from the Class of 2018. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. This video provides a sample of the group’s work.

CPN Sponsoring Program on Guns and Safety

The Community Parent Network is sponsoring an event Wednesday night focusing on education and awareness about child gun deaths and responsible gun storage. “Be SMART: A Conversation About Kids, Guns and Safety” will take place from 7-8 p.m. in the West Auditorium. Admission is free. Click here to register.

Clothing Drive Benefits Military Veterans

Last month’s clothing drive led by the Students Helping Soldiers club resulted in the donation of 100 adult coats, 55 children’s coats, 48 pairs of gloves, more than 30 hats, and 15 pairs of boots, according to sponsor Dean Moran. All of the items were given to the Midwest Veterans Closet in North Chicago.

Foundation Event Canceled

Sunday’s Stevenson Foundation event, “A Magical Year Ahead: Finding Your Happy Place,” has been canceled due to low ticket response.

New Year, New Strategies for Parents

Stevenson‘s Substance Abuse Prevention Coordinator, Dr. Cristina Cortesi, will share regular reflections during the school year in the Daily Digest. For more information on Dr. Cortesi and the substance abuse prevention program, visit her web page.

Wrestling

Stevenson at Randy Conrad Invitational: The Patriots captured the tournament title at East Leyden for the second straight season, defeating Conant, 209-196, and 11 other schools for the team crown. Three Pats won their weight class, led by senior Tommy Frezza (22-2), who claimed the 120-pound championship for the second time. Tommy, who finished sixth in Class 3A last year, defeated fellow 2018 state qualifier Alex Guiliano of Conant (19-2) by a 6-0 score in the championship match. Fellow senior Max Gomez (20-6) finished first at 195 after placing second last year. He pinned Ryan Golnick (21-6) of Jacobs in the title bout. 106-pound freshman Cole Rhemrev (22-6) won his first varsity tournament title, defeating one of the top-ranked wrestlers in Class 2A, Harvard’s Bryce Fiegel (28-3), with a 12-4 major decision. A trio of Pats placed third: senior Yoni Leibovitz (12-8), junior Alex Scott (16-13) at 170, and senior Dan Erdenetsogt (15-8) at 220. Girls Basketball

Stevenson 62, Waukegan 33: Junior Avery King led all scorers with 20 points and sophomore Lydia Lueck added a season-high 15 off the bench for the host Patriots (12-7, 3-4) in the Sports Center. Avery scored 11 of her 20 points in the first quarter as SHS rolled to a 23-4 lead, and Lydia had eight points in the second quarter to help the Pats build a 43-17 halftime advantage. Lydia sank three of the team’s eight 3-pointers. Freshman Simone Sawyer scored 10 of her 12 points in the opening quarter. - NFHS Replay

Boys Swimming

Stevenson at Evanston Invitational: The Patriots placed second behind Neuqua Valley in the 18-team field, 289-273. Senior Joseph Song finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.28), was third in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.69), and swam a leg in the second-place 200 freestyle relay (1:27.92). He was joined in the relay by senior Richard Lee, who also was third in the 50 free (22.08), plus juniors Nic Comini and Jake Kim. SHS competed without all-stater Topher Stensby. - Official Results

Boys Diving

Stevenson at New Trier Winter Dive Classic: Freshman Jack White earned a season-high score of 388.80 and finished sixth out of 25 divers. Sophomore Jaden Pazol also competed (126.95). In the team standings, Stevenson placed sixth out of 10 teams.

Girls Gymnastics

Stevenson at Chester Jones Invitational: The Patriots finished fifth among 10 teams at Evanston Township High School, posting a score of 132.775. New Trier won the meet with a score of 145.775. Senior Sarina Johnson was the top performer from SHS. She placed 11th in the all-around (34.950) and finished ninth on uneven bars (8.7). Junior Riley Polatsek was eighth on balance beam (8.975). - Official Results

Boys Bowling

Stevenson at Lake Zurich Invitational: The Patriots placed ninth out of 16 teams at the Brunswick Zone in Deer Park. Sophomore Joey Gluck led SHS with a six-game series pin total of 1,146, which was 28th out of 179 bowlers. He had back-to-back games of 225 and 224 during the second half of series. Sophomore Nicholas Sternes rolled the best game of the day for Stevenson (242) and finished with a 1,102 series. Also competing for the Pats were sophomore Ryan Lerman (1,031, 190) and Benjamin Ries (1,030, 198) and senior Kerry Mueller (982, 182). Machesney Park Harlem, which finished fifth in the state last year, won the tournament with a 6,141 score. Stevenson had 5,291.

New Boys Lacrosse Coach Named

Tom Hake, a former all-state player and coach at Glenbrook North High School, has been named Stevenson’s head boys lacrosse coach. Click here to read more about him. Student-athletes interested in meeting the new coach are invited to an informational meeting at 3:30 today in Room 2004.

Free SAT Practice Test Registration Deadline Monday

All juniors are invited to take a free SAT practice test Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Field House. Registration closes Monday. Space is limited to the first 575 students who sign up. Click here to register. The practice test will help juniors build testing endurance and give them a real-time snapshot of their testing performance. Scores are received the same day and will accessible online. Students who register also will have the opportunity to schedule a virtual meeting to learn more about their score report. Madrigal Singers Auditions Thursday

Auditions for Madrigal Singers will take place after school Thursday in the Choir Room (Room 2202). All students are welcome to audition. Madrigals is an a cappella choir specializing in Renaissance music. The group will prepare for the Madrigal Dinner to be held on Sunday, March 10 at the Arboretum Club in Buffalo Grove. CLUB NEWS

Would you like to be a peer tutor second semester? Attend an orientation meeting at 3:45 Thursday in the Recital Hall. Continuing tutors will have a meeting in the West Auditorium at the same time.

INTRAMURALS

Open Gym Volleyball begins Wednesday, and meets every Wednesday from 6-7 a.m. in the Sports Center. Visit the open gym web page for all the dates.

ATHLETICS

Anyone interested in playing boys lacrosse is invited to an informational meeting at 3:30 today in Room 2004 to meet the new coach, Coach Hake.

COLLEGE NEWS

Juniors are invited to apply for the Stony Brook University Simons Summer Research Program. Applications are available in the College Career Center (Room 1123). Stevenson may nominate up to three students for the program. Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, must be high school juniors, and must be 16 by the start of the program to be eligible. The application has an essay requirement and will need to be completed and turned into the College Career Center by Monday. Please see Mrs. Kamman with any questions.
