Hi all,

Sorry for the slow response time -- I'm dealing with a death in the family.

Vince had asked me in passing whether having this little list for this particular PDP-12 project is really the best approach given the activity and depth of the VCF forums, and honestly, I have wondered the same thing. I started this list before I even knew about the VCF forums and even then I thought maybe there wouldn't be that much interest or community around the PDP-12 given its age. But, since preservation and documentation is a big part of my reasoning for doing this, I've come around to thinking that maybe it would be better to move these conversations there so that they'll be available to more people.

Thoughts?

Peter

I have been frustrated by:
  1. Related activity also appears on YouTube and Twitter.  I understand the value of a YouTube video but fail to see the value of Twitter. I hope that one group site will serve for all text postings and that any videos are immediately logged on that site with a description and link to the video.

  2. This group does not seem to behave like a regular google group (where emails go to and from googlegroups.com. If not switching to VCF forums, then at least switch to a regular google group.

I only recently learned of the VCF forums and have not engaged other than reading a few posting. I've used google groups almost from their inception, but I see no problem with switching if others vote that way.

Hi Maury,

Yeah, I have not been good about cross-posting things from YouTube and Twitter to here, but that's something I should make a commitment to doing, whether it's here or VCF. I sort of thought of this group as support team / community and YouTube / Twitter as dissemination to the community and world, but it does mean that this group is less useful when it could be a log of everything. My apologies.

I assume that the reason it doesn't behave like a regular Google Group is that it's through the UMN's Google Apps instance (or whatever that's called). What is the problem with it coming from another location? (No subtext, just curious.)

Thanks,

Peter

I suspect this is about Reply-To munging.

The thing that bothered me was that replies seemed to accumulate individual addresses along with the group address. In digging into this issue, it seems it's not a matter of location but rather how different email clients (or web sites) handle replies. With my email client (Thunderbird), when I want to reply to a group email, I'm presented with "Reply" and "Reply List". For me, the normal thing to do is "Reply List" unless I want to reply off-list to the sender. It seems that some clients (and, for example, the gmail web site) only provide "Reply" and "Reply All". Using the latter, means everyone sees an email to the sender with a CC: to the group and to any other individuals previously included. It gets messy as follow-on postings accumulate additional individual addresses. So, switching to a googlegroups.com address probably won't help with this.

Your reply to me was To: <me> with a Cc: <group address>. Thus, Thunderbird did not treat it as a group email and in order to reply just to the group, I had to click "Reply All" and then move the Cc: line to the To: line and delete your address. Clicking on the link at the bottom of the email and posting with a browser is probably easier, and it mimics the newsgroup scheme which I think google groups is emulating. Distributing and posting via email is just a modern appendage.

Basically, ignore all of this and focus on the VCF forums issue. Sorry for wasting your time.
