Join us for these stories of our history, as we prepare for our next chapter. We'll also be celebrating our newest Chalice members in today's service!

Our Annual Congregational Meeting will be held June 9th after service from 11:30 in the Sanctuary (and on Zoom if you cannot be present onsite). We invite everyone to stay and participate. We'll review and vote on the budget, as well as take a straw poll, which will impact how our delegates vote on Article II during General Assembly. Your voice will always matter to us, and we encourage all members to come practice the "The Right of Conscience and the Use of the Democratic Process Within Our Congregations and in Society at Large”

Meet our newest Chalice Members

We hope you’ll get to know them more in the weeks to come. Be sure to say “hi” and extend a warm welcome to these wonderful people!

Bethany Simonsen

Bethany Simonsen has been married to her husband, Mike, for twenty-two years. They have three children, and the youngest, Lydia, has been enjoying coming to Chalice with her. Bethany grew up in Oregon and has a degree in Humanities-Classics from BYU. She left the Mormon church because it didn't live up to her standards of love, inclusion, and serving others. Bethany is an avid reader, a writer, a freelance editor, and a musician. In her (little) free time, she also likes to garden and raise monarch butterflies.

David Campbell

I grew up in Simi Valley and left as soon as I could at 19 years old on my own to find a more diverse and inclusive community and college. I finished my A.A. at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA and then made an even greater move to Chicago where I finished my Bachelor of Science in Commerce with a degree in Finance at DePaul University. Not long after, I fell into a career in accounting for large real estate assets (such as a regional shopping mall for example). I've been in that field for 18 years and have enjoyed being able to utilize both my practical and intellectual skills as well as my social and creative skills. Just no creative accounting!

I spend most of my time spoiling my two dogs, Clover & Spirit who are 8 year old Malagasy Coton de Tulears. I call them "My boys". They have a lot more hair than I do so I spend a lot of time grooming them myself so their long coats always look fresh. I enjoy taking them on adventures such as family camping trips or trips to the beach or dog park or just relaxing at home. I also enjoy reading, cooking, baking, gardening, helping others and building a legacy of goodwill. Usually, when safe, the boys get to sample what I cook.

I was raised Catholic but left the church as soon as I had a choice. I didn't believe a faith existed that included and accepted everyone as I was taught to. Years ago I asked Google "is there a religion that accepts everyone" - and that's where I found the Unitarian Universalists. It took quite a time, and some courage after that, before I finally decided to come see what UU's are all about and landed at Chalice.

Things you may not know about me is at one point I was an avid musician and at one time had an opportunity to be a professional model but chose business school instead. I love to experience the diversity the world has to offer whether it is meeting new people, traveling, nature, or trying different or even exotic foods.

In participating in the Starting Point program at Chalice, I never imagined finding so much in common within the differences I had with my peers. I am happy to have met everyone in Starting Point and to continue getting to know others in our congregation.  I am grateful to be part of a loving and inclusive community that can also have difficult conversations and also gives back to local people and organizations.

Erica Gardner Schuster & Wayne Ayres

In addition to being new members of Chalice, Wayne and Erica are now new parents! “We are so happy to share the joyful news of our daughter's birth. Solstice Scout Gardner Schuster Ayers was born on Friday 5/17 at 6:14 am. She is our miracle, and we're very much in love (as well as quite sleep-deprived). We look forward to raising her in this special spiritual community.”

THIS WEEK enjoy COFFEE in the NEW LOUNGE!

As we transition out of our Sanctuary we’ll be inviting you to grab your coffee in the Lounge (this was formerly Childspace and is next to the administration office). We’re not finished with it, but it is taking shape nicely and promises to be a cozy gathering place. We invite you to grab your coffee there and then head back to the Sanctuary for the Congregational Meeting!

Hello Team UUtheVote!

This week, many of us are writing postcards for North Carolina. I hoped for us to meet and stamp but the congregational meeting is right after service on Sunday. Please give me (Jill Lewis) the completed ones this Sunday in the Sanctuary after (or before) service. I will stamp and mail.

Next Sunday, June 16, we will meet upstairs in the boardroom, chat and stamp after service.

I hope some of you were able to text with Sylvester from VoteRiders this Tuesday. His sessions are super fun with driving music on as we text. Why not try it? If you have been texting, please give us the numbers. We track and report these actions toward our UUA Good Trouble efforts.

VoteRiders does have an event coming up you may want to attend-

See below:

Our Time is Now": Inspiring and Mobilizing Black Women (virtual registration) · VoteRiders

It's motivating to hear how others are working toward our same values and better outcomes for us all.

As I mentioned a few emails ago, Pamela Lopez is going on vacation for a few weeks. Please contact me (Jill) with all UUtheVote matters for now.

NEW CARDS COMING!

I expect to have 500 Environmental Voters Project postcards next week. I will email you as soon as they are available. Not sure if they will be in bundles of 20 or 30. You can email me with orders starting today so that I can package them for you when they arrive.

That's it for now.

Love,

Jill
