Paper Pilgrims and Indian Feathers

Ayanna Gaines

As children, we are taught a very simplistic version of the origin of Thanksgiving. We make Pilgrim hats out of construction paper, and pretend that the Indian headdresses we construct are representative of all Indians. Yet the truth of the holiday is much more complicated than we are led to believe. How can we reconcile the truth behind Thanksgiving with the togetherness of family and friends it is intended to represent?

COMMUNITY FORUM ONLINE

Bringing Hope - Ventura County Family Justice Center

Saturday, December 4, 2021 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm via Zoom

“I was once a victim.  Now I’m forever a survivor.” -Jillian

with

Erik Nasarenko, Ventura County District Attorney, Michael R. Jump, Chief Deputy District Attorney, Victim and Community Services

&

Heather Abbott Gonzalez, Voices of Ventura County

Topics to include:

  • VC Family Justice Center services

  • Helping empower and support survivors

  • How to help/how to get help

Ventura County Family Justice Center is a collaborative team from more that 40 public agencies and community-based organizations and volunteers dedicated to working together to help reduce trauma and make a positive difference in the lives of those impacted by family violence.

VCFJC provides a caring, safe environment where victims and their families can access the comprehensive services they need to recover, heal and break the cycle of violence.  All services are offered free of charge.

Erik Nasarenko was appointed District Attorney in January 2021 after serving as a prosecutor since 2008, as Mayor of Ventura, a city councilmember, and as the DA representative to Homeless Court.  As part of his commitment to protecting victims and seeking justice in all our communities, Erik is expanding the Mental Health Unit and working to create domestic violence housing and a new Family Justice Center in Oxnard.

Michael R. Jump is Chief Deputy District Attorney and leads the DA’s Victim and Community Services Division.  Mike is the Executive Director of Ventura County’s first Family Justice Center.

Heather Abbott Gonzalez’ family are survivors of crime.  After working to ensure that her daughter received the justice she deserved, Heather went on to change how sexual assault is addressed in our community, helping to establish the Family Justice Center and Voices of Ventura County.

Crossing Paths - for Middle Schoolers

What is Crossing Paths? Crossing Paths is an interfaith exploration program brought to us from Soul Matters. The program includes an emphasis on theological grounding, a distinct take on religious pluralism ("Many Mountains, Many Paths") and an abundance of experiential learning while also maintaining a focus on UU youth identity formation. Each month a new religion is explored, including Buddhism, Catholicism, Quakerism, Paganism, and more.

In December we will explore…

Catholicism!

This program is geared toward our Middle School-aged youth (6th through 8th grade). Each Sunday we will share in discussions, activities, videos, music, and games while we practice our Unitarian Universalist Principles of “acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations” and “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”

When: Sundays, beginning 12/5 and concluding 12/19

Time: 2-3pm

Where: Fellowship Hall at Chalice (Yes, in person!)

**Masks must be worn by all who attend.

Please RSVP here: https://bit.ly/ChaliceCP. Youth need only show up with open minds and hearts. Attendance throughout the month is strongly recommended. Families need not be members for youth to attend. Friends welcome!

Questions? Contact your Director of Religious Education, Sam Dickerson, at d...@chaliceuu.org.

Chalice Lighting

To start your day, a meeting, or before a meal

We light our chalice as a symbol of gratitude

as we celebrate the abundance of our lives together.

In this sanctuary we harvest bushels of strength for one another,

and offer our crop with the hands of compassion and generosity.

In the authentic and gentle manner of our connections,

we cultivate a simple sweetness to brighten our spirits.

May we be grateful for the ways we nourish and uplift each other,

For it is the sharing of this hallowed time together that sustains us.

~ Katie Gelfand

We Need Your Help with our History!

Next year marks the Fellowship’s 60th year of affiliation with the UUA.

A History Committee is collecting documents, photos, and any sort of media that relates to our past that you may have squirreled away in your garage or closet. We are hoping to sort, identify and store these items at Chalice. We are also hoping to contribute to a 60th anniversary service on January 30, 2022.

If you have any such items, please leave them at the Fellowship when our administrator is there or contact Jo Ann Van Reenan (vanre...@gmail.com.) Thank you!
