Chalice Lighting

image.jpeg

To start your day, a meeting, or before a meal

Until "All" Means All

The chalice, as a symbol of Unitarian Universalism,
arose as a beacon of hope in an atmosphere of tyranny.

The chalice arose as a sign of promise
that the marginalized would neither be forgotten nor ignored,
because they are beloved and precious from the perspective of the Holy.

This morning, we remember all of the people
who have been told explicitly—
or implicitly, through police violence or government policy;
through derision or dehumanization;
that they’re anything less than whole; anything less than beloved.

As we each light a chalice in our homes,
may we make of our lives a beacon:
a symbol of our promise to draw the circle wide;
a sign that we will not rest until “all” means all.

~ Rev. Erika Hewitt

Come join us for an event for the community, by the community!

“There is no power for change greater than a community discovering what it cares about.” - Margaret J. Wheatley

The Conejo Valley Community Action Fair is an opportunity to come together, share ideas and discover what we care about as a community. We’ll learn how progressive organizations in the Conejo Valley and Ventura County provide information and resources that make us safe and ensure that our voices are heard. We’ll listen to speakers from local organizations, including Rev. Nica, network with our neighbors and exchange ideas that will help us bring about positive change in our community.

Ventura County Interfaith Communityimage.jpeg

Do all dogs go to heaven? Inquiring minds want to know! But seriously, what do our faith traditions have to say about our relationship to the animal kingdom? Come join the Ventura County Interfaith Community as it explores what three faiths (Jainism, Christianity, and the Bahá'í faith) have to say about this topic. The forum will begin at 7:00 PM on November 11th and will take place at St. Columba's Episcopal Church (1251 Las Posas Rd., Camarillo). The event is free and all are welcome!

Sci-Fi Latino Noir Performance

Written & Performed by

José Torres-Tama

Torres-Tama treads that dangerously vague turf of performance art gracefully… He takes Latino life on a magical mystery tour with dexterity and daring.

---The Village Voice (New York)

ALIENS, IMMIGRANTS & OTHER EVILDOERS is an inventive Sci-Fi Noir performance solo that exposes the hypocrisies of a system that vilifies the same people whose labor it readily exploits.

In a scintillating, utterly absorbing seventy-five minutes, Mr. Torres-Tama dissects the current immigrant situation from a personal viewpoint that reaches back through American history to its earliest days and follows that thread to the present moment… José Torres-Tama is a performance artist of the highest caliber.

--Theatre Notes (Los Angeles)

“…One moment we were on the verge of tears, the next, we were laughing uncontrollably. On a visceral level Torre—Tama’s work aims for the heart; on the cerebral level, it blows minds.”

--Dr. William Stark

Dept. of Modern & Classical Languages

University of Rhode Island

If you're feeling overwhelmed by the political climate and unsure of how to take action, you're not alone. To help sift through all of the information, the Democracy in Action Team is sending out details each week on what actionable items you can take to fight political division and its threats to equal rights, our values, and democracy. It lists upcoming in-person, local events, as well as important calls you can make to your representatives. If you'd like to receive these emails, please email Kelly Niebergall at kellyni...@gmail.com. Let's resist together.
