Dear all,

We have been informed of some confirmed cases of leptospirosis/Weil’s Disease among rowers in Cambridge. Please find attached Safety Alert from British Rowing on signs, symptoms and prevention.

To reduce your risk of catching leptospirosis:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly and/or shower after rowing
  • Cover minor cuts and scratches with waterproof plasters before getting in your boat
  • Clean open wounds, such as blisters or calf abrasions with an anti-bacterial substance
  • Wear trainers or boots to avoid cutting your feet before getting in your boat
  • Wash all equipment after outings, taking particular care to wash oar handles.

Section 8.4 of RowSafe provides guidance on waterborne infections and diseases, and the British Rowing Medical Panel and NHS Direct provide information on Weil's disease.

Very best,
David

Dear all,

We have this morning been made aware of further cases of Weil’s disease (leptospirosis) in rowers from multiple clubs.

Please ensure that the advice below is circulated to your clubs again. In addition, if you or someone in your club develops symptoms:

  • Seek immediate assessment/treatment from your GP (this ensures cases are reported via the NHS)
  • Inform them you’re a rower who may have been exposed on the river
  • Report to British Rowing via their Incident Reporting system

Very best,

David
