Cześć, kolega z University College London prosił mnie o przesłanie tego do osób konkursowych. Może kogoś zainteresuje. Są bardzo dobrzy z Machine Learningu i kryptografii.

Pozdrawiam

Master Opportunities at University College London

Taking advantage of having access to the contestants mailing group, which gathers the brightest algorithmic minds, I would like to invite everyone to get familiar with the master programs at UCL in London. I will personally support every applicant from this camp as well as referees, to make sure the application process to CS department proceeds smoothly.

The master programs at UCL are very topic oriented, so students usually decide to explore very well one area. For the master thesis, they have usually two options: work closely with one of the professors from the related research group aiming to publish in one of the world's recognized conferences or do the joint project in collaboration with one of the London businesses as their thesis (and earn money). The list of Master programs can be found at the website: http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/degrees/ The programs relate Finance, Bussiness, Data Analytics, Machine Learning, Information Retrieval, Security, Machine Vision, Medical Imaging. All these areas are very practical and in extreme need for specialists. They are different from typical computer science schedule like algorithms, complexity or operating system (which are covered by the undergrad studies). I can elaborate a bit more on Machine Learning program as I followed it during the first year of my PhD here. This is the broadest program in the world, as there are more than 10 amazing courses (and more than 20 in general): Supervised Learning, Graphical Models, Unsupervised Learning, Approximate Inference, Applied Machine Learning, Reinforcement Learning, Kernel Methods, Natural Language Processing, Machine Vision, Inverse Graphics, Biomedical Imaging. Usually in other universities, these topics are covered in 1 or 2 lectures, while here they all have separate courses and are explored deeply. Many students after this program go for PhD or to world leading industry players. London is also an amazing place to collaborate closely with all the types of the businesses, so you can expect many industrial lectures and opportunities to reach big software houses, banks, hedge funds and startups for jobs. If you decide to work with one of the professors on the research project, it is worth to know the following information. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) evaluation (2015 result is still awaiting), UCL was ranked in the first place for Computer Science, out of 89 UK Universities assessed (including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial), and considerably ahead of other Institutions. 61% of its research work is rated as world-leading (the highest possible category) and 96% of its research work is rated as internationally excellent.

The only concern can be the funding as usually these programs are a bit expensive. But also UCL helps a lot with finding the money, and if that doesn't work, students can take loan from the UK government on very affordable conditions with the guarantee, that if they don't find well-paid job, they don't have to return the loan Emotikon smile For the Polish students the information about the funding opportunities can be found below (for other nations please select your country). http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/international/countries/europe/poland

More personal note. I am the current coach for UCL ACM ICPC team, trying to guide students, make the department aware of competitive programming and build the algorithmic culture (but my main focus is my PhD). Also, the NWERC ACM ICPC regionals, are much easier and less competitive than Easter European ones Emotikon smile UCL supports students with funds to develop their interests, we have recently sent teams to Petrozavodsk Winter programming camp and Moscow Pre-Finals ACM ICPC Workshop. We also established the relationship with other training centers in China, Brasil, Argentina but don't have enough interested students to send there for camps.

The same will apply for undergrad studies if you know someone interested. Please feel encouraged to reach me via email zbigni...@gmail.com

Thank You Zbigniew Wojna
