We are delighted that such a robust group of people has already signed up for this list. This space will be a forum for questions, discussion, and updates about issues affecting the CC licenses and public domain tools. (much like the old cc-licenses mailing list from years past)
A bit of housekeeping:
- please use this mailing list only for topics directly related to CC legal tools
- please respect
Chatham House rules and remember that nothing discussed here constitutes legal advice
For context, we thought it might be helpful to give a snapshot of work that is underway at CC that falls within our stewardship activities. Here is a list of the main items:
- After a public consultation, we recently published a renewed Stewardship Commitment, which details the principles and responsibilities CC will uphold as license stewards.
- We are continuing to explore strategies to address the increase of troll-like enforcement of CC licenses against reusers who make minor errors in attribution. We recently published a Statement of Enforcement Principles to help establish norms around this, but we are also exploring other options and have other resources on the way.
- We published the CC Legal Database, which includes information about CC-related litigation and scholarship. The site includes functionality allowing anyone to contribute content for inclusion, so please submit any cases or articles that you think should be included.
- With the help of legal clinics at Stanford and Georgetown, we are currently engaged in research around AI-generated works and copyright, and the reuse of biometric data within CC licensed content. The research will be used to update our explanatory materials around the licenses and help shape CC's next steps in these emerging areas.
- We are sifting through data generated in a survey of GLAMs around the world about how the CC public domain tools are serving their needs. Based on the outcome of that survey and other input, we are likely to be making improvements to one or both of CC's public domain tools in the coming year.
Thank you for being here!
