Lionel Scheepmans of Belgium, who is doing a PhD on the Wikimedia movement and its role in changing the paradigm of knowledge creation and sharing. In his view, this is "a social movement developed that is virtually unknown to the general public. It is called [the] "Wikimedia movement" and it has the vision to build "a world in which every human being can freely share the sum of all knowledge". This movement brings together "nearly a thousand websites and several hundred associations in more than 70 nations around the world", as Scheepsmans puts it. Yet it is very little publicized both in the press and scientific literature. Why? How does it work? What is its potential? Where lie its roots?
