This has been composed by TORQUATO DE FIGUEIREDO (1876-1948).  Dr Jose Pereira, Micael Martins and Pe Antonio Da Costa (now in Arizona) describe his work thus: "In TORQUATO melancholy is at its deepest.  Yet more than any composer except Paulo, he expresses the emotional exaltation of the Lotlli [Loutolim] style.  His music seems to rise beyond the illuminated atmosphere into a blackened sky, against which the stars are sharply silhouetted.  Torquato uses little imagery, but vividly.  His sun rises all of a sudden and blots out the starlight.  In Torquato’s masterpiece, the *Soglem mujem vido chintunum* -- a Lament Mando and one of the pinnacles of Goan Song -- there is a blackout on light.  The only metaphor, taken from the Salve Regina ("Hail, Holy Queen"), is that of the world as a valley of tears ("pool of misery").  The song has the tenebrosity of doomsday, and as the principal melody sinks with grief, the contrapuntal one comes in on a note of suspense, as if the trumpet of doom were about to sound, and then vaults upwards into the realm of the resurrection".

1. Reflecting on my whole life, I move in sorrow. There is no one in the world
to console me.
2. This world truly seems a pool of sorrow. There is not one who can tell me
that he is happy.
3. From the moment God made me, I was sunk in sorrow. When will I find
happiness -- only when I am no more?
4. What can I do? I cry out to God. At least you, Lord, have mercy on me,
and take me to your kingdom.
I weep and weep, with tears streaming. I always think of my future
