matplotlib and nodejs

I've got a need to use nodejs 14.x, but when I try to install matplotlib, conda insists it needs nodejs 6.x and wants to downgrade it. Anyone have any advice on how to get them to play nicely? This is on a linux machine, and I've got no problem with the newer nodejs and matplotlib on a mac machine i also have.
