My show channels are currently this (I was trying to install pulp from conda-forge but reverted to more barebones to test)

When I try to install a package it takes about half an hour to fail. The log is something like this (it is incomplete because it's quite large, but I can post the whole thing if requested)
From reading I see some historic posts referring to install slowness e.g. https://github.com/conda/conda/issues/8087 https://github.com/conda/conda/issues/7690. The latter seems to suggest it has been improved but this hasn't been my experience.
I just wanted to check if this was the normal state of things at the moment? If so I won't waste my time trying to figure it out. If not, then what are the causes of this?
Misc Notes:
- There was also reference to a post from March 2019 referring to this https://www.anaconda.com/blog/understanding-and-improving-condas-performance . I've tried some of the things there without any luck (one link about conda-metachannel eventually takes one to mamba, which ironically must be installed via conda install)
- I had an older version of anaconda installed (4.8.2) which was giving similar problems (but crashing instead). I have uninstalled and just installed Anaconda3-2020.11-Windows-x86_64.exe (conda -V gives 4.9.2).
- At some point I added the conda-forge channel but removed it to try to get a more baseline system to test.
- I also have other python executables installed from msys and chocolatey but was hoping they would not be affected. My understanding was anaconda provided its own self contained version of python.

Could the problems with Anaconda installation be caused by security software?
