I normally use Anaconda on Mac OS X but decided to install it on my work laptop which is a PC.  I installed

Anaconda 4.2.0 For Windows 64 bit and expected it to set up the environment paths.  However when I type 'jupyter notebook' or 'python' from the command line I get:

'python' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

[ couldn't find any mention of having to set up the paths manually in the installation instructions or any posts on this forum newer than 2013 on the topic].

I'm using Windows 7 Professional.
thanks

You should launch conda software from the `Anaconda Prompt` in the `Start Menu`

To clarify Ray's response here (which I agree with completely):

You can modify your system or user PATH variable.  It's better to launch the Anaconda prompt.  This is potentially doing more than just adding to PATH - it may be running startup scripts that set other environment variables.

It is far better in the long run for everyone to move away from putting Anaconda's root environment on PATH, and rather start their use of Anaconda by activating some environment - root or otherwise.

Hi,

is there a way to have the same benefit of the anaconda prompt (PATH, startup script etc...) when using cygwin as a console ?

I would discourage using cygwin as a prompt for launching native Windows software since cygwin cares not a bit for interoperability with native software.

MSYS2 is a better option here.

Conda 4.4 will have better support for various shells in Windows and it's coming soon. Keep your eye on the conda-canary channel.
