Hi,

with the new Anaconda version the default installation path on Windows has been changed:
Spaces are no longer allowed in the installation path on Windows.

Before the new version this path was working:
C:\Program Files\Anaconda3

With this new version it does not work.
We could use for example:
C:\
Anaconda3

My problem is:
Our company uses with Windows 10 AppBLocker, which
will block per default every executables outside C:\Program Files\Anaconda3...

Do you have an idea, why this installation path on Windows had to be changed?
Would it be possible to revert this change with the next version?

Thanks and Regards,
Sándor

This was an unfortunate change that crept in due to an external contribution that we didn't check as well as we should have. Spaces in paths is something we discourage though.

We'll probably look into making it work again for the next release towards the end of this month.

Your AppBlocker software will probably still let you install to %APPDATA%, can you try? From cmd.exe, enter echo %APPDATA% then try installing into that directory.

The net change was positive: shortcuts were not being called with the correct python interpreter prior to the change.  Unfortunately, we did lose space support with it.  More info at https://github.com/ContinuumIO/menuinst/pull/47

%APPDATA% environment variable (in our case) points to a folder owned by a user, Anaconda Python should be installed to a folder which can be reached by all users. AppLocker is provided by Microsoft.

Can you ask your sys admin to add an exception? The software in AD will work a lot better if you do.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for your comment.

Our security does not really want to make any exceptions because of this.
They say, serious applications should not have any issue with spaces in the installation path.

The issue is not urgent for me, we will not install this version.
But the next version of Anaconda should support again spaces in the installation path.

Sándor

The problem with this is that the Anaconda Distribution is not a single application. It is a curated suite of packages written by Open Source developers all over the world, some serious and some not so serious. Maybe you could inform them about GNU make, a package I doubt anyone would describe as "not serious" and how it doesn't work very well when installed into a path or ran in with spaces?

What Ray says is absolutely true in general.  We support Windows, Mac and Linux, and the the vast majority on all platforms is the same software.  Windows takes special care because we do support things that break many parts, such as spaces in path.

The issue is not urgent for me, we will not install this version.
But the next version of Anaconda should support again spaces in the installation path.

This might be a language barrier thing, but it comes across as rather demanding.  We're doing the best we can on a completely free product.  If you need more support, faster fixes, or guaranteed functionality, I recommend you contact sa...@anaconda.com about paid support options.
