On behalf of the School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) at The Ohio State University (OSU), we are excited to announce a new faculty position: Assistant Professor of Professional Practice in Urban Forestry. This is a 9-month, contract-based non-tenure-track faculty position with a primary emphasis on teaching and outreach. Opportunities for promotion are similar to that of a tenure-track position, but annual and promotional evaluation primarily focuses on teaching and outreach (rather than research).
Our aim is to recruit, support, and retain a scholar in Urban Forestry, including urban ecological systems broadly defined. We welcome applicants with expertise in the structure, function, and management of urban trees and forests; processes influencing canopy dynamics, tree health, and biodiversity; and the role of trees, vegetation, and greenspace in places where people live (e.g., cities, townships, and suburban communities). We strongly encourage applications from individuals whose professional work reflects a commitment to sustaining life through meaningful human connections with trees, vegetation, and greenspace.

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching (65%), Extension (25%), and service (10%) in areas including urban forest dynamics, arboriculture and tree health, tree canopy change, forest-based ecosystem services, tree and forest measurement, and equitable access to greenspace in municipal and urbanizing areas. The teaching expectation for this position equates to approximately 12 credits per academic year (e.g., 4 separate 3-credit courses, or some combination of classes with lecture and labs).
SENR is home to a vibrant scholarly community committed to engaged teaching, community partnerships, and solutions-oriented research that advances environmental and social well-being. This position will have additional opportunities to collaborate with other units on-campus and across Ohio.
Apply or share this opportunity: go.osu.edu/urbanforestry
Initial consideration will be given to applications received by March 31, 2026. Review of applications will continue until the position has been filled.
We welcome informal inquiries, which can be made by contacting Search Committee Chair Dr. Alia Dietsch at Diets...@osu.edu.
Thank you!
