Dear colleagues, I will be running a symposium at IMCC8 called “ocean science communication: what’s new and what’s next.” Consider this your invitation to submit something, and feel free to pass along to interested colleagues.

Here is the symposium summary I submitted for your reference:

"Making marine science matter" requires taking scientific expertise out of the ivory tower and communicating it to stakeholders, the public, and decisionmakers. Science communication has been integral to IMCC since the beginning, but in recent years there have been massive changes to the public science engagement landscape. This symposium, which will feature experts from academia, the environmental sector, and government, will highlight new tools, case studies for success, and expert perspectives on the changing public science engagement landscape. It will include specific, actionable steps the IMCC community can take to more effectively communicate their science to key stakeholders and end users.

This symposium will also be tied to a focus group, which will have a goal of creating a multi-coauthor scientific paper for journal publication. "

So we are accepting a variety of types of talk here, from retrospectives, case studies, tool demonstrations, and forward-thinking "what's next" type talks.

This will also (ideally) lead to a multi-coauthor peer-reviewed scientific journal article. And it will include a panel discussion featuring some of you.

If you're interested in participating, here's what to do:

Submit your abstracts here by May 15
https://conbio.org/mini-sites/imcc8/program

Make sure to indicate that you want to participate in my open symposium. Do this by clicking "no" for "is this part of a closed symposium,"

Then select "ocean science communication, what's new and what's next" for "Please select your first choice for the session or open symposium that you’d like your presentation to be a part of."

Also, and this part is vital, please let me know that you submitted an abstract so I know to check on it!

If you'd like me to take a look at your abstract I'm happy to, but this is not necessary, and I will be traveling from 4/23 to 5/18 with limited email access. So if you want to send it to me please do so in the body of an email not as an attachment or link.

Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions for me.
