to Impact Evaluation Working Group
Dear Counterfactual Community,

Happy 2025 and Chinese New Year!

As we start the new year, I wanted to share some exciting updates and activities from the Impact Evaluation Working Group. We have a busy and promising year ahead!

First, we are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting an Extended Symposium at ICCB 2025, which will be held in Brisbane/Meanjin, Australia. The symposium will focus on “Future Directions for Counterfactual Evaluation of Conservation Interventions.” We have an excellent lineup of presentations covering key topics: (1) current challenges and opportunities in counterfactual evaluations, (2) foundational principles for evaluations, and (3) future research priorities. We will share more details on the presenters, schedule, and other specifics soon.

In addition, we will be hosting a Forum at ICCB that builds on the symposium’s themes. The session, titled “Breaking New Ground in Conservation Science: Tackling Challenges and Building Principles for Effective Counterfactual Evaluation,” will seek to create and propose key recommendations to help address the barriers of counterfactual evaluation in conservation across sectors. It will be open to all who are interested. Further details will follow shortly.

Our mentoring program continues to thrive, with eight mentor-mentee pairs meeting regularly. We are also excited to announce that our virtual seminar series will resume on February 4th. Please keep an eye on the upcoming program here: Virtual Seminar Series Link.

Looking ahead, we will soon be reaching out to gather your input on key papers published over the past 6-12 months that you believe are important contributions to the field of impact evaluation in conservation. Our goal is to compile and review these papers to create a bi-annual or quarterly Summary of Published Research on Impact Evaluation in Conservation. Your input will be essential for ensuring that this becomes a valuable resource for our community.

Finally, we will be seeking additional board members in the near future to help strengthen our communications and outreach efforts. If you are interested, please stay tuned for more information.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support. We look forward to a productive year together!

Best wishes,
Tanya
