Dear Counterfactual Team,

Following SCB Asia in June, another exciting conservation conference is just around the corner!

If you are attending ECCB 2026, we warmly invite you to join the SCB Impact Evaluation Working Group symposium:

Evidence and Attribution in the Age of Novel Data, Methods, and Technologies.
Tuesday, 7 July: 4:30–6:00 p.m.
Room BM.1.26

Abstract:
As conservation increasingly depends on robust evidence to inform policy and practice, this symposium will explore how advances in novel data sources, analytical methods, and technologies are improving conservation impact evaluation. Presentations will examine topics including artificial intelligence, Earth observation, conservation finance, national-scale impact evaluation, and reproducibility, while also addressing important challenges around causal attribution, transparency, and equitable knowledge integration.

Speakers include:
  • Dr Tanya O’Garra, University of Oxford
  • Ms Saija Papunen, University of Helsinki
  • Dr Joséphine Gantois, University of British Columbia
  • Mr Jakob Poffley, University of Cambridge
  • Mr Alex Caruana, University of Oxford
Event details:

Following the symposium, we would be delighted to have you join us for an informal social gathering at 7:00 p.m. at a venue (to be confirmed). This will provide an opportunity to continue the conversation and connect with colleagues interested in conservation impact evaluation in a relaxed setting. Please note that this is an informal meet-up, so attendees will need to purchase their own food and drinks.

We hope to see many of you there!

Best regards,
The SCB Impact Evaluation Working Group (IEWG) Team
