Stephen Venn joins the SCB Europe Board
Thank you to all SCB Europe Region members who participated in the voting for the open seat in the SCB Europe Board.
Stephen Venn, affiliated with the University of Lodz, Poland and University of Helsinki, Finland, was elected as new board member starting in August 2025.
Stephen has worked in the field of conservation biology since the late 1990s, with a focus on empirical ecological
research and interdisciplinarity. He received his PhD from the University of Helsinki in 2013 and his subsequent research has focused on urban ecology, sustainability science, arthropods and grassland ecology. In addition to research, Stephen also worked for
two years as a Conservation Planner for Parks and Wildlife Finland.

Sini Salmirinne, Metsähallitus 2022
Whilst he is originally from the UK, he has spent most of his working career in Finland, and is currently employed
as a Senior Research Fellow at Lodz University, Poland. Stephen joined the Policy Committee in 2024 and he is highly motivated to contribute to the development of SCB policy. His mains goals will be to strengthen the interaction between researchers and stakeholders,
and to enhance sustainability in conservation biology. It is easy for us biologists to focus entirely on biological aspects of the cases we study, but the prospects of successful conservation outcomes are generally better if we collaborate on developing conservation
solutions that are also economically and socially sustainable. On the policy front, Stephen aims to ensure that SCB Europe has strong connections
with policymakers and other stakeholders, and that we will be recognized as a source of knowledge and expertise about conservation biology at the European level.
We look forward to working with you and are very happy for you joining the SCB Europe board team!
