About IASNR

The International Association for Society and Natural Resources (IASNR) is a nonprofit professional association that supports interdisciplinary scholarship and practice on the interactions between society and natural environments. IASNR’s key activities include publishing the peer-reviewed journal Society & Natural Resources, convening membership at an annual international conference, and fostering a vibrant academic and practitioner community.

Position Overview

IASNR is seeking a seasoned leader to serve as Interim Managing Director to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight during a time of change for IASNR. This part-time, remote position (8–10 hours/week) is ideal for someone with experience in non-profit operations, board collaboration, and transitional leadership.

The Interim Managing Director will ensure continuity in management, support staff and programs, and work closely with the IASNR Executive Team to maintain organizational stability and progress toward mission-driven goals. This role involves high-level oversight, governance support, and operational guidance—without day-to-day execution responsibilities currently held by IASNR’s Operations Manager and external contractors.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Oversight

  • Uphold and advance IASNR’s mission, vision, and strategic direction during a time of transition.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Team/Council to support strategic planning process, governance, and decision-making.
  • Maintain alignment between internal operations and long-term goals.

Operational Management

  • Provide executive oversight of IASNR operations managed by staff and contractors.
  • Support and collaborate with IASNR’s Operations Manager, who oversees day-to-day administration, communications, financial workflows, and conference logistics.
  • Ensure compliance with legal, financial, and regulatory standards.
  • Monitor and strengthen internal systems for efficiency and effectiveness.

Financial Stewardship

  • Work with the Treasurer and Operations Manager to manage and monitor budgets, financial reporting, and revenue streams (e.g., memberships, conference, journal).
  • Work with the Executive Team and staff to ensure sound financial health.
  • Provide regular financial updates to the Executive team/Council.

Staff & Culture

  • Supervise and mentor the Operations Manager and other staff or contractors supported by IASNR, offering executive-level guidance and performance support.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and productive organizational culture.
  • Conduct staff evaluations and provide mentorship as needed.
  • Ensure clear and consistent communication among staff, contractors, and volunteers.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the Executive Team / Council, staff, funders, and external stakeholders.
  • Be able to represent IASNR publicly and support the continuity of relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Support transition-related communication to membership and external partners.

Transition Support

  • Facilitate a smooth leadership transition, including the transfer of institutional knowledge to any incoming leadership.
Qualifications
  • Proven leadership experience, preferably at the executive or interim level.
  • Familiarity with non-profit associations, academic publishing, or conference-based organizations.
  • Strong organizational, financial, and people management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Experience working with boards and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to step into an existing organization and provide stability and strategic clarity.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of IASNR.
