Dear All,

The WCS Training and Capacity Building Program is delighted to announce a new request for nominations/applications for the 2018 WCS Graduate Scholarships for candidates seeking to pursue a Masters or PhD degree.

The process for application will be the same as last year – an initial short-form application, due April 27, 2018. There are two short forms, one for the nominator and one for the nominee, attached here. Applicants who are approved from this first round will be asked to submit a long-form application, due June 11, 2018.

Typically, candidates who receive a 2018 award are expected to start their graduate studies in the fall of 2019 (some exceptions are possible). Depending on funding, there may be the following scholarships available:

Christensen Conservation Leaders Scholarship (1-2) – for applicants from Asia/Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and North American indigenous groups.

Beinecke African Conservation Scholarship (1) – for applicants from Africa, who will attend graduate school in the United States.

C.V. Starr Conservation Fellowship (1) – for applicants from a tiger range country in Asia working on tiger conservation and/or who will study tigers.

Robertson Big Cat Conservation Fellowship (1) – for applicants from a big cat range country in Asia, Africa or Latin America, or from a North American indigenous group, working on big cat conservation and/or who will study big cats

WCS/WCN Graduate Scholarship (1) – a joint scholarship award that is part of a partnership between WCS and the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN). Normal WCS scholarship guidelines apply, but the applicant’s study plans should have a strong community aspect.

For the Africa Program – There is the possibility of two additional scholarships for applicants from Africa, dependent on final approval from the Tellus Educational Foundation, and contingent on the university in which a scholar will enroll. These scholarships would be a Tellus Leadership Scholarship (for applicants from Africa) and/or a Harry Schwarz Conservation Scholarship (for candidates working on African elephant or rhino conservation).

WCS Country Program Directors, or other agreed and designated nominators, may nominate one applicant per country using the nomination guidelines provided separately. All nominations must also be vetted regionally, so WCS staff are required to coordinate with their Regional Director and/or NY-based regional Executive Director to discuss potential nominees.

Background information on the Graduate Scholarship Program, details of what expenses a scholarship covers, and nomination guidelines are attached.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

The deadline for receiving completed short-form nominations/applications is Friday April 27th.

All the best,

Kate
