Subject: Call for Papers – Research Topic on Human-Bird Interactions

Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for a Research Topic we are launching with Frontiers in Bird Science, titled “Impacts of Human-Bird Interactions on Human Well-Being and Behavior” (see this webpage). We invite submissions of manuscripts focused on research related to human interactions with birds.

Background and Scope

This Research Topic seeks to advance knowledge of how human-bird interactions shape people’s psychological, cognitive, and physical health as well as conservation motivations. We invite research that employs multi-disciplinary as well as social science approaches to understanding human-bird relationships. Research themes and concepts of particular interest include (but are not limited to):
- Human values, beliefs, emotions, attitudes, norms, and knowledge related to bird conservation

- Bird and wildlife education outcomes for youth

- Therapeutic effects and health benefits of interacting with birds or listening to birdsongs

- Health and behavioral benefits of community science on bird monitoring and conservation

- Cultural differences in human-bird interactions and their implications for human health and wildlife conservation

- Impacts of human-bird conflicts (e.g., nuisance, bird strikes, etc.) on human well-being, attitudes, or behavior

Article Types & Fees

This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Hypothesis and Theory, and Systematic Review as priority article types but will also accept Brief Research Report; Case Report; Classification; Clinical Trial; Editorial; General Commentary; Methods; Mini Review; Opinion; Perspective; Review; and Technology and Code for review. Articles that are accepted for publication incur a publishing fee charged to Authors, institutions, or funders. A limited number of fee waivers will be provided for selected contributors.

Submission Timeline
- Abstract submission deadline*: 7 Dec 2026
- Full manuscript submission deadline: 3 May 2026
*Early feedback by the editorial team on timely submitted abstracts will be available upon request.

Peer Review Process

All submissions will undergo an initial review by the editor, followed by a double-anonymous peer review by two referees. The goal is to support authors in refining their work to align with the journal’s mission of advancing scholarship in the field of bird science.
