Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to share that enrolment is now open for Cohort 6 of my QGIS for Wildlife Crime Law Enforcement training, beginning 3 November 2025. This course uses QGIS and crime science approaches to make conservation data actionable.

The training is delivered online in small cohorts, with two tailored pathways:

  • Foundations Track (8 sessions): for complete beginners – step-by-step introduction to QGIS, no prior GIS experience required.

  • Professional Track (8 sessions including an advanced module): for those with some QGIS familiarity – rapid refresher followed by advanced applications, including SMART data integration, patrol mapping, and crime hotspot analysis.

Key features:

  • 8 × 1.5–2 hour live sessions (recorded for review).

  • Practical exercises with simulated SMART conservation data.

  • Personalised support in a small-group format.

  • Certificate of completion.

Pricing: £400 per participant
(Early-bird £350 if registered by 18 October 2025)

Testimonials from past cohorts:

“Clear, practical, and directly relevant to conservation work.” – Cohort 2 participant
“This training gave me the tools to make maps that my team actually uses.” – Cohort 3 participant

If you or colleagues in your networks are interested, further details and registration are available here: https://www.conservationriskanalytics.org/store

Dear colleagues,
I hope you’re well.
Following the short “registration open” note I sent on 3 October about the guided course, I’ve now launched the fully self-guided version (same content, but you can start any time).8 practical modules + a complete simulated African protected-area dataset, built specifically for conservation risk / crime-science applications (hot-spot mapping, least-cost patrol routes, risk surfaces, incident clustering, etc.).Several frontline rangers and analysts have since written saying they would love the training but simply can’t afford it. So I’ve also just added a £99 “Sponsor a Frontline Professional” option — one click funds the entire package for someone on the ground (no names or photos shared, just a short anonymous update).
If this might be useful for your own work, your students, or protected-area partners, I’d be grateful if you’d share the link. Happy to discuss bulk or university licences any time.
Many thanks,

Emma Richards (DCrimJ)

Dear all,

I am delighted to announce that the University of Vermont is hiring for an exciting Endowed Professorship focused on renewable energy systems. Though this isn’t a conservation-focused position, there are (as we all know!) many intersections between conservation and renewable energy. Please take a look and share this announcement far and wide, with any individuals or groups who may be interested. I’m the search chair and am happy to answer questions about the position (Rachelle Gould, at rgo...@uvm.edu). Thank you!

DETAILS BELOW:

The University of Vermont seeks to fill an Endowed Professorship focused on interdisciplinary research on renewable energy systems. The position will be part of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources (RSENR), and we anticipate close ties (and a possible secondary appointment) with UVM’s College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (CEMS). Ideal candidates will have a record of a) scholarship that engages with both academic and non-academic partners and b) involvement in discussions related to energy and climate change at multiple scales and in multiple fora.
