Dear List members,
For those of you planning to attend the International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB) 2025, we’re excited to invite expressions of interest for a 2-day pre-congress forum called “Advancing Customary Land Rights in Area-based Conservation: Comparing Pathways, Barriers, and Enabling Factors Across National Contexts”. The forum will take place June 14-15 2025 in Brisbane, Australia.
In the context of international targets to scale up area-based conservation, Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities are recognised as often being the most rightful and effective stewards of biodiversity. However, national laws and policies governing area-based conservation may or may not support customary land rights. Understanding these variations between countries is critical for making sure that international commitments to rights-based conservation are effective on the ground.
The forum therefore aims to identify common barriers, enablers, and pathways for advancing customary land rights in conservation across different countries. We're bringing together 20–30 collaborators to exchange knowledge, co-develop a conceptual framework, and work on a joint paper offering insights for practitioners, activists, funders, and researchers.
Right now, we’re looking for potential collaborators, especially those with country-specific expertise or experience in advancing customary land rights. You can find more information in this slide deck.
There will be a small additional fee, yet to be determined, to cover venue costs (we were told to expect something between 10 and 60 USD per person, but it might be more). Unfortunately we don't currently have funding to sponsor participation.
If you are interested to join or have any questions, please contact us at pa...@planetindonesia.org; saur...@msu.edu; and shruti....@atree.org. If you're interested to contribute but can't attend in person, please do let us know as well, so that we can explore possibilities for remote contributions.
Warm regards,
Paul Thung (Planet Indonesia), Devashish Saurav (Michigan State University), and Shruti Mokashi (ATREE)
Hi SSWG list members,
Thanks so much for your interest in this Forum. With the ICCB2025 Early Bird registration coming up in two weeks, we wanted to note that it is still possible to register your interest in this Forum.
Note also that we've secured a small amount of funding from Planet Indonesia’s social science budget to help prospective Forum contributors overcome some financial barriers to attendance. To stretch funds as much as possible, stipends are ordinarily capped at 1,500 AUD per person - unfortunately this won't cover all your costs of attending ICCB2025. If you want to apply for this, please let us know when you email us.
