Please get in touch with Alison Ormsby (orms...@gmail.com) and Shonil Bhagwat (shonil....@gmail.com) if you are planning to attend the Society for Conservation Biology's 31st International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB 2023) and would like to present a paper in this symposium.

Symposium Title:

Conservation of biocultural diversity through a global network of sacred natural sites

Symposium Abstract:

Sacred natural sites are areas of land and water that have spiritual significance to people. These sites support a rich heritage of ‘biocultural diversity’ evolved within complex socio-ecological adaptive systems. Numerous examples of sacred trees, groves, burial mounds, forests, ponds, lakes, and rivers and historical sites holding a cultural and conservational importance exist throughout the world. The hundreds of thousands of these sites distributed across all continents constitute a vast network, but currently there is very little understanding of their distribution globally. Why is such an understanding necessary? Not only does this distributed network of sites provide an ‘informal’ network of nature reserves that has a much longer history of protection than many of the world’s formally protected areas, but it is also a network of sites that have cultural significance to people. In light of the recent global commitment to protect one third of Earth for nature, made at the 2022 UN biodiversity conference (COP15) in Montreal, Canada, a better understanding of these sites is even more vital. This symposium invites contributions from scholars working on sacred natural sites and biocultural diversity.

Dear Alison and Shonil,

Happy New Year,

I wish to indicate my interest to attend the ICCB 2023 in Kigali.

I will like to make some contributions on the work my organisation is presently doing in Cameroon on protecting sacred and primary forest for culture and spiritualism underpinning biodiversity conservation.

Kind Regards
