I am writing on behalf of the LA-SELS working group of the Global Land Programme, which is conducting a mapping of concepts and terminology in the socio-environmental field across Latin America (details below). We think that many SCB LACA Region members are working on topics closely related to this effort, and we believe your network could help us reach voices that might otherwise be left out of the study.

Le invitamos a participar en una encuesta de investigación liderada por el Grupo de Trabajo de Sistemas Socio-Ecológicos de América Latina (LA-SELS WG) del Global Land Programme (GLP).
En América Latina, las definiciones y términos asociados al estudio de las relaciones entre el uso del suelo, los ecosistemas y las sociedades emergen desde una gran diversidad de disciplinas, tradiciones e idiomas. Sin embargo, aún sabemos poco sobre cómo se relacionan estas diferentes perspectivas entre sí. Este estudio busca mapear esa diversidad conceptual, las prácticas de investigación y la terminología utilizada en este campo en la región, con el fin de fomentar el diálogo transdisciplinario e intercultural y reducir barreras para la colaboración regional e internacional.
Lo que le pedimos: Completar una breve encuesta (~10 minutos) sobre los conceptos y términos que usted utiliza en su trabajo para describir y analizar las relaciones entre el uso del suelo, los ecosistemas y las sociedades, y cómo estos son comunicados en su contexto disciplinario y regional. Sus respuestas serán reportadas únicamente de forma agregada y confidencial.
Por qué es importante: Su experiencia — ya sea desde las ciencias ambientales, la geografía, la agricultura, las ciencias sociales, la ciencia de datos, la ciencia indígena, la sostenibilidad u otras disciplinas afines — es valiosa para comprender cómo se articula este campo en nuestra región. Sus perspectivas contribuirán a un artículo académico sobre este tema y los resultados serán compartidos con la comunidad y con usted si así lo desea.
La participación es completamente voluntaria. Puede dejar preguntas sin responder si lo desea y retirarse en cualquier momento sin consecuencia alguna.

Mapping "Land Systems" Concepts in Latin America: Invitation to Participate in a Research Survey

Dear colleague,
We invite you to participate in a research survey conducted the Social-Ecological Land Systems of Latin America Working Group (LA-SELS WG) of the Global Land Programme (GLP).
In Latin America, the definitions and terms associated with the study of relationships between land use, ecosystems, and societies emerge from a wide diversity of disciplines, traditions, and languages. Yet little is known about how these different perspectives relate to one another. This study seeks to map that conceptual diversity, the research practices, and the terminology used in this field across the region, in order to foster transdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue and reduce barriers to regional and international collaboration.
What we ask of you: Complete a short survey (~10 minutes) about the concepts and terms you use in your work to describe and analyze the relationships between land use, ecosystems, and societies, and how these are communicated in your disciplinary and regional context. Responses will be reported in aggregated, de-identified form only.
Why it matters: Your expertise — whether from environmental sciences, geography, agriculture, social sciences, data science, Indigenous science, sustainability, or related fields — is valuable for understanding how this field is articulated across our region. Your insights will contribute to an academic article on this topic, and results will be shared with the broader community and with you personally if you wish.
Participation is completely voluntary. You may skip questions or withdraw at any time without any consequence.
