Background:

 The George Wright Society is the premier U.S. nonprofit organization promoting excellence in natural and cultural resource management, research, protection, and interpretation in parks and protected areas. Founded in 1980, the George Wright Society is an association of researchers, resource managers, administrators, educators and others from government, nonprofits, and the research and academic community. The Society is named after George Melendez Wright, the National Park Service’s first ever Chief of its Wildlife Division and a pioneer in conservation science and research in the 1920's and 1930's. Today, the Society is best known for its major biennial national conference and for its regular publication, the George Wright Forum.

 The Role of the Executive Director:

Reporting to a Board of Directors, the Executive Director leads the organization and is responsible for planning, implementing, managing and guiding the Society’s work to ensure it fulfills its mission, remains financially sustainable, and has the maximum possible impact.

 Strategy and Board Engagement

 Membership and Partner Engagement and Relations

 Fundraising and Financial Management

 Day-to-day Management

 Publications and Online Outreach

 Conferences

Qualifications and Skills:

 Required qualifications include:

  • Experience in management and/or leadership roles 
  • A solid understanding of conservation issues
  • Experience working collaboratively with government agencies  and other partner organizations.
  • Proven fundraising skills and experience
  • Experience working collaboratively with Boards, members, and other external partners
  • Demonstrated skills in communications
  • A service-oriented approach

In addition, the following specific skills are highly desired:

  • Familiarity with nonprofit administration
  • Computer skills 
  • Experience in event management
  • College degree in relevant area; relevant post-graduate degree desirable
  • Bilingual or multilingual ability preferred

Location and Compensation: The  Executive Director position is based in the San Francisco Bay Area (location TBD)—the home of George Melendez Wright and his family and a hub for land management research and expertise.

 Salary and benefits package to be determined by the Board of Directors, commensurate with experience.
