Dear Colleagues,

We wanted to make sure you all saw our latest SSWG e-newsletter.  We have Board member election results, events for you at two SCB congresses, and an award announcement.

Also, a reminder that if you did not receive the email below directly to your inbox, you may not be an active member of the SSWG.  To remedy this issue, please log in to “member login” in the upper right corner of the SCB homepage.  There, you can “Edit My Member Information” and select the SSWG under “Working Groups”. Or, if you aren’t an active member of SCB itself yet, please sign up and select SSWG membership as part of the process.

Sincerely,
Ashley Dayer
SSWG Board President

SCB Social Science Working Group Board Election Results
& Other News

Dear SSWG Members,

The Social Science Working Group of the Society for Conservation Biology is pleased to announce the results of our board member elections.

The winning candidates are:

• Georgina Gurney (new member)

• Kathy Halvorsen (second term)

We had an impressive slate of candidates for this Board election, demonstrating the commitment of our members to the working group. We are appreciative of Kathy Halvorsen for her continued service to the Board, especially her efforts in coordinating SSWG’s social media presence. We eagerly welcome Georgina Gurney, particularly given her strong connections to the Oceania and Marine Sections. The Board members’ new terms of service begin in July.

In other news, SSWG is hosting events at the International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC) and the North American Congress for Conservation Biology (NACCB).

At IMCC, please join us for:

• A SSWG Business Meeting on Wednesday, 27 June from 12:00-1:15 pm in the Kabu room. Learn more about what SSWG is up to, provide feedback, and get involved.

At NACCB, please join us for:

• A SSWG Business Meeting on Tuesday, 24 July at 12:00-1:15pm in Dockside 3. Bring your lunch. Learn more about what SSWG is up to, provide feedback, and get involved.

• A Speed Networking Event for students and professionals on Monday, 23 July from 6:45-8:15pm. Back by popular demand after NACCB 2016, we are now looking for interested students and professionals. Participants will rotate through 20 three-minute networking "speed dates" and then have an opportunity to chat further at the mixer that follows. Registration for this event is required. Cost on a sliding scale, which covers apps and a drink. For more information and to register, please see: NACCB 2018 Speed Networking Event

• A SSWG Mixer on Monday, 23 July starting at 8:00pm. Open to all; no RSVP required. Join us at The Fox at the Bay (just 1 block from the conference venue) to connect socially with social scientists and social science enthusiasts.

We will also be presenting Dr. Nathan Bennett with an SCB Early Career Conservationist Award at NACCB during the Members meeting, and he will be providing a short and insightful presentation on his work during our NACCB SSWG Business Meeting. Please read more about Nathan’s award here.

In closing, we want to thank all of our members for their continued membership in SCB, and we’d like to extend a special thank you to all of those who voted in the SSWG Board elections. The SSWG looks forward to seeing you at an upcoming Congress or hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Ashley Dayer
SSWG Board President
