Assistant Professor of Social Dimensions of the Environment

Position:  The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (http://nres.illinois.edu) seeks an outstanding scholar with expertise in social dimensions of the environment focusing on environmental or natural resource justice.   This is a 9-month, full-time position, reflecting a 60% research / 40% teaching appointment.

 

Responsibilities:  We are particularly interested in candidates who use innovative approaches to advance knowledge of the relationship between equity and environmental issues, such as climate change, biodiversity conservation, water, pollution, and other natural resource uses.  The successful candidate is expected to work at the nexus of inequity, environment, and social processes or outcomes. An example within this nexus includes the social causes and consequences of environmental inequities and the impacts of injustice on environmental outcomes.  Work in the Midwestern United States as well as in international contexts is of interest.  Other desirable attributes include an analytical focus at the level of institutions, societal structures, and organizations and expertise in the health effects of environmental injustice and/or the impacts of differential access to natural resources.  Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated potential for conducting research grounded in theory and application, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and advising, and experience collaborating with social and natural scientists.  The successful applicant will be expected to recruit and train graduate students, teach and advise at the undergraduate and graduate levels, develop successful grant proposals, and publish regularly in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals.

 

Qualifications:  A Ph.D. in an appropriate field is required.  Persons with a J.D. degree and appropriate training/experience will also be considered.  

 

Start Date:  The stating date for this position is August 16, 2017.  For full consideration applications must be received by January 15, 2017.  Early applicants may be interviewed before the closing date.  However, every application submitted prior to the closing date will receive full consideration.  

 

Salary:  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications.
