Dear Colleagues,

We wanted to make sure you all saw the SSWG April e-newsletter.  Most notably, we continue to seek nominations for Board members until 16 April 2018.

Also, a reminder that if you did not receive the email below directly to your inbox, you may not be an active member of the SSWG.  To remedy this issue, please log in to “member login” in the upper right corner of the SCB homepage.  There, you can “Edit My Member Information” and select the SSWG under “Working Groups”. Or, if you aren’t an active member of SCB itself yet, please sign up and select SSWG membership as part of the process.  You will want to remedy this before our elections in May so you can vote on our leadership.

Sincerely,
Ashley Dayer
SSWG Board President

SCB Social Science Working Group April News

Dear SSWG Members,

Time for another newsy update from the SSWG Board.

Board nominations: You have until 16 April 2018 to nominate yourself or a colleague for the SSWG Board. We seek two representatives to the SSWG Board to serve a two-year term, beginning in July 2018.  For more information about Board member roles and nomination materials, click here. Also, stay tuned for a call to vote in the elections in May.

Spotlight on social science: We have created a new Spotlight section on the SSWG website, highlighting the work of individual conservation social scientists and new publications. If you have suggestions for people or papers to be featured (including your own!) please contact us at sswgcommu...@gmail.com.  Also receive notifications on new content via on our twitter @scb_sswg and on SCB’s Social Science Working Group Facebook page.

Conference planning: Would you like to help SCB SSWG with conference planning? We are looking for someone who has 2-3 hours biweekly to volunteer with the Program and Conference Planning Committee with its events planning for 2018 SCB conferences as well as inclusion of social science aspects at at SCB conferences. Put yourself forward for consideration by emailing jgli...@sandiegozoo.org. Please include a brief description of your thoughts about how you can help ensure SCB SSWG is represented at SCB conferences. Questions welcome!

Social science at SCB congresses: Speaking of conferences, as you register for 2018 SCB Section Congresses, make sure you take note of the excellent social science workshops and short courses you can sign up for. Based on your feedback, SSWG members are developing a survey research methods short course, a key theories for conservation short course, and a qualitative methods workshop for the North American Congress for Conservation Biology. Also, check out the human dimensions of marine conservation workshop at the International Marine Conservation Congress.  We encourage SSWG members who are leading workshops or short courses at other congresses to share info about them via our listserv. And check out future SSWG news updates for more information regarding social science symposia, interactive sessions, business meetings, networking events, and student events.  We hope to see you at one of the many congresses this summer!

Sincerely,

Ashley Dayer

SSWG Board President
