Research Associate needed to work on climate resilience for seaports at University of Rhode Island

BASIC FUNCTION:

In collaboration with the PI and team members, conduct United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) funded qualitative and quantitative research to develop a climate risk and vulnerability indexing tool that contributes to a deeper understanding of storm resilience for maritime freight nodes (i.e., seaports.) Help develop and test a methodology to work with an expert group to select, weigh, and aggregate indicators of climate risk and vulnerability across the 23 high and medium-use coastal ports communities in the USACE North Atlantic Districts coastal inlets and navigation channels. Project manage this research and work to advance other research projects under the direction of the PI.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Contribute to an OMB- and IRB-approved, mixed-methods, research protocol to compare climate risk across a range of ports or maritime freight nodes.

Oversee selection and convening of an expert group and carry out a Delphi-type method for expert elicitation around a variety of potential indicators.

Conduct and supervise field research at northeast seaports using standard qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Conduct site visits, interviews and field work, as required.

Assist in analysis and synthesis of data through the creation of algorithms and quantitative methods.

Project manage, contribute to and help oversee the budget timelines and the production of deliverables to the USACE, including, but not limited to: contributing to writing of journal articles and white papers, and other project outputs.

Contribute to and oversee the development of new funding proposals to support ongoing related research.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in management of graduate and undergraduate students. 
Perform additional duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Computers, printers, ArcGIS, statistics, word processing, data management and spreadsheet software.

ALL REQUIREMENTS ARE SUBJECT TO POSSIBLE MODIFICATION TO REASONABLYACCOMMODATE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES.

REQUIRED:

1. Master’s or advanced degree in social sciences, (e.g., Planning, Policy, Geography, Risk Assessment or related field).

2. Minimum of two years’ experience in one or more of the following areas: outreach, social science research, human dimensions research and/or related research field.

3. Demonstrated project management ability.

4. Demonstrated proficiency in written communications.

5. Demonstrated organizational skills.

6. Demonstrated strong verbal and interpersonal skills.

7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations

PREFERRED:

1. Demonstrated strong background in coastal management, ports, and maritime infrastructure.

2. Demonstrated experience in statistical analysis and data management.

3. Demonstrated experience with analysis and software tools (e.g., ArcGIS, R, Python, etc.).

4. Demonstrated grant writing experience.

5. Demonstrated familiarity with IRB and OMB approval process for human subjects research.

6. Demonstrated familiarity with relevant theory in natural hazard resilience, vulnerability, and/or the impact of climate change on social-ecological systems.

7. Demonstrated experience conducting mixed methods (qualitative/quantitative) research.

8. Demonstrated publication history in academic journals and/or gray literature.

9. Demonstrated experience in public speaking (e.g., conference presentations).

10. Demonstrated experience supervising support staff and/or mentoring students.

11. Demonstrated experience in coastal planning and policy.

12. Demonstrated experience with budgeting and accounting.
