Post-doctoral Social Scientist, Impact Evaluation

Conservation International

 

Conservation International (CI) helps societies sustainably care for nature, our global biodiversity, for the benefit of humanity.  As part of the CI Social Science Initiative, CI seeks a post-doctoral social scientist to work with an interdisciplinary team to rigorously evaluate the impacts of biodiversity conservation interventions. Research will initially examine the impact of understudied conservation interventions in the Amazon; based on the successful candidate’s interests, subsequent studies may evaluate interventions in other geographies. Collaborators may include CI country offices, Duke University, and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Drawing upon existing data and established partnerships, the successful candidate will lead or contribute to two or more peer-reviewed publications in the first year. 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic requirements:

  • Ph.D. or related experience in a social science (economics, sociology, political science, etc.) or an interdisciplinary Ph.D. with substantial social science training;
  • strong quantitative and statistical skills;
  • ability to work both independently and in a team;
  • familiarity with international biodiversity conservation or related field;
  • excellent English oral and written communication skills.

 

Additional qualifications include:

  • impact evaluation experience and expertise, including quasi-experimental and/or experimental methods
  • proficiency with statistical software (e.g., R, STATA, SPSS)
  • proficiency with both qualitative and quantitative approaches to social science;
  • experience developing and delivering trainings, preferably in multicultural contexts;
  • ability to travel internationally;
  • experience in developing countries;
  • proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese.

 

This position is based in Arlington, Virginia (USA), with an initial duration of 1.5 years and the possibility of extension based on funding.
