Working Title: Social Scientist Outreach Specialist
Official Title: OUTREACH PROG MGR I(P65NS)
Principal duties:
· Serve as Social Science Outreach Specialist for the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, a state-wide program of research, outreach and education dedicated to the protection and wise use of Great Lakes and ocean resources.
· Overall, this position adapts social science theory and methods to the highest priority needs for protecting and using Great Lakes resources and builds community partnerships in tackling important coastal issues by providing the public, industry and agency personnel with applied research, practical demonstration, instruction and consultation on coastal and Great Lakes issues.
· Sea Grant concentrates its effort in four focus areas: healthy coastal ecosystems; resilient communities and economies; sustainable fisheries and aquaculture; and environmental literacy and workforce development.
· Examples of applying social science to address Great Lakes issues include providing Wisconsin beach managers with information on the economic impacts of beach closures and collaborating with the emergency managers and meteorologists on how best to communicate information about severe storms.
Degree and area of specialization:
· A Master's Degree in a social science discipline with an environmental focus is required.
· A Ph.D. in a social science discipline with an environmental focus is preferred.
· Relevant social science disciplines include, but are not limited to: sociology, geography, psychology, anthropology, economics, political science, public policy and environmental studies.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
· At least two years of professional experience applying social science methods to address environmental issues.
· This may include relevant applied research associated with graduate studies.
· Must show a demonstrated ability to: 1) initiate and complete projects with minimal supervision; 2) communicate and work effectively with diverse audiences; and 3) interpret technical information and relate it to local concerns.
