Mediterranean-type regions are biodiversity hotspots facing multiple threats from climate change and anthropogenic drivers. The “Ad-Hoc Committee for Mediterranean Conservation” was established during 2012 under the umbrella of the European Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB-ES) to tackle conservation issues in the Mediterranean regions of Europe.

However, Mediterranean-type regions exist not only in Southern Europe but also in North Africa and other 4 regions of the world (USA, Chile, South Africa, Australia) that span across different SCB sections. Often, biodiversity threats and conservation issues are shared across these regions.

SCB structure includes the possibility of setting topical working groups that focus on a topical area relevant to the mission and goals of SCB (see https://conbio.org/groups/working-groups/about-working-groups). In order to propose a working group, twenty active SCB members must express interest and agree to support its formation.

Therefore, the objective of this mail is to access whether enough SCB members would be interested in joining a Mediterranean ecosystems working group. A series of possible topics to address by the group would include protected areas, ecosystem services, landscape management and restoration, farming and forestry, fire and grazing, climate change, impact assessment, species management, exotic species, governance, public participation and social sciences. So, in case you are interested, please contact Francisco Moreira (fmor...@cibio.up.pt) by March 15, 2016.
