Did you know that it’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month at CU Boulder?
Per Erika Kleinova in OIT, Cybersecurity Awareness Month (CSAM) is part of a global effort to recognize the importance of security in the digital space every October. For CSAM’s 20th anniversary, CU Boulder is joining the overall CU system in getting back to security basics, with an emphasis on security best practices that we should be doing all year long, for every device - work, school, or personal.
The week of October 16-20, CU system will be hosting three webinars for a week of talks and panels discussing work in the security space, ways to secure your university research (hosted by CU Boulder!) and a security roundtable on the state of security for individuals with security leadership from each CU institution. You can learn more about these webinars and how to sign up at the CSAM website.

of a laptop or desktop computer. It comprises four half-day modules and intends to give attendees a hands-on introduction to high-performance computing (“supercomputing”) using CU Boulder’s Research Computing resources.
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
· Identify community- and CU-specific research computing resources
· Find help/documentation for research computing
· Access research computing resources
· Use basic Linux to navigate the command line
· Transfer data to/from research computing systems
· Find, download and apply software on research computing systems
· Schedule jobs on research computing resources including CPUs, GPUs and high-memory platforms
· Monitor your resource usage
· Request research computing resource allocations
Upon successfully completing the associated assignments, learners are issued a digital badge, allowing achievements to be displayed and shared. Just as diplomas serve to recognize degrees, digital badges are artifacts that offer recognition and storytelling about micro-credentials.

TALK: Disobedient Libraries
October 8, 2024, 11 am
Eaton Humanities Bldg., Room 150
No registration required
Amidst widespread attacks on and disillusionment with public institutions, many activists, community organizers, and artist collectives have launched informal libraries to support social movements and intentional learning communities. In this talk, we’ll examine libraries themselves as media forms, and we’ll consider how the curation, circulation, and civic activation of the various media within their collections — from books and zines to cassette tapes and pirated digital files -- constitute vibrant, creative, transformative media practices. This is a part of VAST: Visiting Artist & Scholar Talks.

Also from the NEH—New Public Access Policy
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has released its public access policy, which will go into effect on October 1, 2025 and will apply to all new awards made after this date. In addition to requiring the submission of publication manuscripts, the policy requires grantees to publicly share applied or scientific research datasets in accordance with the award’s Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMSP), which should follow FAIR Principles and CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance. CRDDS is here to help CU Boulder researchers meet public access requirements in their DMSPs: https://www.colorado.edu/crdds/what-we-do/grant-support.
You can read the full text of NEH’s public access policy for additional details and plans for future guidance and FAQs. NEH is the second agency to officially release its public access policy, following the Department of Energy’s last month.

Wednesday, March 5 at 7PM--Jointly with our friends in CU Boulder Classics, we’re looking forward to welcoming Sebastian Heath from the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York for his talk entitled, Pompeii as a Platform: The Present and Near-Term Future of Reusable Data from a Roman City. This talk reports on the work of the Pompeii Artistic Landscape Project (PALP), which was a Getty Foundation funded collaboration between the speaker and Prof. Eric Poehler of UMASS Amherst, and on the current Pompeii Linked Open Data (P-LOD) initiative, a more open-ended effort under the same direction. PALP produced a website that supports sitewide investigation and P-LOD is now focused on the long-term availability of reusable data, on developing new computational approaches to exploring that data, and on delivering new forms of public interaction with its resources. Stay tuned for registration details!
