This session explores how joy is a fundamental human need that strengthens individuals and communities. It highlights the importance of self-acceptance and embracing what it means to be Autistic, using Autistic Adults NYC as an example of a space where Autistic people can connect, thrive, and celebrate their identities. The session also reexamines what an autism diagnosis can mean, compares different frameworks to view disability, and emphasizes why embracing autism essential for wellbeing, inclusion, and community empowerment.
About the Presenter: Nicole Russell (she/her), originally from Austin, Texas, moved to Brooklyn in 2020 to pursue a degree in Music Composition and Theory at NYU. She was diagnosed as Autistic midway through her degree, and upon graduating shifted her focus to building a vibrant, supportive community for Autistic people in the city. This led to the founding of Autistic Adults NYC, a nonprofit dedicated to serving the NYC Autistic community through social events, advocacy and education. A dedicated community builder, organizer, speaker, and consultant, Nicole is committed to advocating for a more inclusive, equitable NYC for Autistic adults. Dynamic and deeply connected to the arts, Nicole continues to organize art events, teach and create both classical and experimental music. Her creativity flows through every aspect of her work – from running innovative events to weaving artistic expression into community-building efforts.
