A group of around 35 people turned up early Tuesday to protest Loveland’s closure of its only overnight homeless shelter.
The city of Loveland is scheduled to shut the gate on the South Railroad Facility on Tuesday after those who spent their last night there leave that morning. The protesters were concerned about the lack of an overnight facility, particularly as cold months are approaching.
City officials say they have no choice with the temporary permit having expired and City Council direction to wind down the city’s homeless services. The ACLU weighed in, asking in a letter for the city not to close the shelter.
The protesters’ signs asked the city to “Have a heart” and to “Love thy neighbor.” One said: “Loveland City Council, Even the Tin Man had more heart than you. Shame!’
