RE: Satanka Bay at Horsetooth Reservoir
Dear Commissioner Kefalas,
I am writing to express my support for the recent decision to separate paddle crafts from motorized boating in Satanka Bay, restricting the Bay to paddle craft only. I feel this move has been long overdue, and with the escalating reservoir usage, is now necessary for the safety of all visitors. As stated in Satanka Response 2, This area represents less than 1% of the total water surface area of the Reservoir.
Last year, we expected that limited parking would control the number of boats, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards on the water, but folks with light weight crafts drove to Lory State Park to park their vehicles and accessed the Reservoir from the west shore. At one point I counted over 100 motorized boats and paddle crafts in the Satanka/north ramp area. I live across the road from Lory State Park, and the sharp increase in traffic and random parking along Lodgepole Drive presented a safety hazard and impacted residents.
I understand that there are objections from people, specifically fishermen, about this new policy. I hope the LBOCC will defend this decision and maintain the ruling to permit only paddlecraft in Satanka Bay.
Thank you for your service and your consideration of this letter.
Sincerely,
Patricia Haley-Miller
