More Than a Director: Mara Gold's Whole-Hearted Commitment to Berthoud

When Mara Gold first started contracting with Berthoud Habitat for Humanity in 2024, she already understood why affordable housing mattered. She knew the statistics. She believed in the mission. And then she found out she was expecting her first child, and something shifted.

"I started to feel the weight of what our community was feeling. Expecting my first child instilled in me the sense of urgency in needing stability that a lot of our partner families face."

Mara has grown alongside this organization in every sense of the word. What began as a contracting role has become something much larger. Today, she serves as both Homeowner Services Director and, in a newly expanded role, Director of Operations for Berthoud Habitat for Humanity.

It is a promotion that reflects not just her skill, but her heart for the mission.

"This role allows me to advocate for our homeowners, streamline processes across Berthoud Habitat, and become involved in decisions that will ultimately affect the Homeownership Program for generations," she says.

Every day, Mara shows up for families who are working hard toward the stability of a home, the same stability she was thinking about when she was pregnant, the same stability she now thinks about as a mother. She is quick to remind anyone who will listen that Berthoud Habitat is a hand up, not a handout.

"Our partner families are extremely hardworking individuals who pay a mortgage, just like everyone else."

This May, in honor of Affordable Housing Month, we are proud to celebrate Mara — a mom, a director, and one of the quiet forces behind every family who walks through our doors.

Construction Updates

Something exciting is happening in Berthoud — and it started in a classroom.

As the Geometry in Construction school year wraps up at Thompson Valley High School, we are preparing for a milestone moment: the home built by Thompson Valley students and school volunteers is getting ready to make its journey to Berthoud. And when it arrives, it will hold a very special distinction, it will be the first home at our brand new subdivision, Harvest 47.

We could not be more excited.

The Geometry in Construction program is a powerful example of what happens when education and community come together. These students did not just learn math, they built something real, something lasting, something that a partner family will one day call home. That is the kind of lesson that stays with you forever.

We are deeply grateful for our continuing partnership with the Thompson Valley School District, whose investment in this program reflects a shared belief: that every person in our community deserves a stable, affordable place to call home.

Stay tuned — we cannot wait to share more as Harvest 47 takes shape and this remarkable home finds its place in Berthoud.

Welcome, Mike!

"I am particularly energized by the opportunity to lead construction efforts for Berthoud Habitat as a platform for both community building and scalable impact. My focus is on expanding access to affordable housing while strengthening the organization’s capacity to serve a greater number of families over time.

Beyond delivering homes, this role represents an opportunity to create long-term stability for families and drive measurable, positive outcomes in the community. I am committed to helping Berthoud Habitat grow its reach, increase its effectiveness, and amplify its mission to support more families in achieving housing security."

-Mike Porter, Construction Director
