In partnership with the Colorado Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs, we hosted our first-ever youth forum. This event gave Boys & Girls Clubs youth, ages 11-16, an opportunity to speak to their State Representatives about issues that are important to them.
Boys & Girls Clubs’ youth panel featured the voices of Asha from Wellington, Skylar from Loveland, Ty from Loveland, Keagan from Fort Collins, and Leslie from Fort Collins. Youth brought up key concerns and topics that were important to them including access to mental health supports, the social and political divisions at both the local and national level, academic achievement following a year of remote learning, and navigating acts of bullying and discrimination.

State Representatives featured on the panel: State Representative Andrew Boesenecker, Senator Joann Ginal, State Representative Cathy Kipp, State Representative Hugh McKean, and State Board of Education Chair Angelika Schroeder. State Representatives shared their plans for legislation to help families and youth recover from COVID-19. State officials also encouraged youth and families to get connected with their local city councils and school boards.
Also in attendance were local and county officials, Commissioners Jody Shadduck-McNally and John Kefalas, Loveland City Council members Kathi Wright and Don Overcash, as well as, Town of Wellington Trustee Ashley Macdonald. There was a special welcome from Loveland Mayor Jacki Marsh, Boys & Girls Clubs of Larimer County CEO, Kaycee Headrick, and Boys & Girls Clubs in Colorado Executive Director, Danielle Felder.

Summer at the Club Serves More than 800 Kids
Going into summer, we knew that the COVID-19 pandemic had and continues to significantly impact young people’s mental health, academic enrichment, and ability to socialize. For those reasons, our summer program focused on several strategies to support students in these areas.

Mental Health
All Club members who attended our program had access to a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for group and one-on-one counseling.
Academic Enrichment
Daily activities offered were focused on the areas of education, recreation, arts, workforce development, character and leadership, and healthy living. Club members had the opportunity to participate in resume building, STEM camps, field trips to tour local businesses, outdoor recreation, reading programs, and so much more.

Club Director Lands on List of Amazing Local Leaders
Megan Hale, Senior Club Director in Wellington, earned recognition in NOCO Style’s 30 Under 30. Megan has been with Boys & Girls Clubs for two years and quickly became a critical part of the team.
“I grew up in Fruita. It was a very small town at the time, so when I think about my youth, I wish there had been a Boys & Girls Club in my hometown. The community of Wellington is similar in that sense, and I feel happy to be a part of the growth,” said Megan in her interview with NOCO Style.
