WLN's new toolkit for championing democracy.
Dear John,
What is a democracy champion? We’ve considered that question over the past year as we’ve built our Democracy is on the Ballot program.
A democracy champion is someone who supports policies, programs, and rhetoric that advance voting rights and access, protect election workers, counter election disinformation, and promote a free and fair democracy for all. We’re fortunate to work with so many democracy champions in this network. Western Leaders Network and our sister organization, Appalachian Leaders Network, have created a toolkit to help current elected officials, candidates for public office, and other leaders be democracy champions.
This toolkit includes articles, government resources, guides on best practices, and analyses from policy experts, organizations, news services, and election officials on preparing for the 2024 election and strengthening our democracy. We also included links to opinion editorials and interviews with election leaders to showcase some of the work we’ve accomplished through our Democracy is on the Ballot program.

We encourage you to share it with candidates and other current elected officials you know who want to learn more about the challenges our democracy is facing and how we can defend and strengthen it.
Do you know of a resource that should be included in the toolkit? Do you have a question for Western Leaders Network or want to participate in our Democracy is on the Ballot program? Contact Jess Pace at je...@westernleaders.org.
Sincerely,

Gwen Lachelt
Executive Director

Navajo Nation takes action to cut methane
After a five-year campaign effort, the Navajo Nation Council Resources and Development Committee unanimously approved a program that will give the Navajo Nation oversight of its air sources, cut pollution from the oil and gas sector, and protect communities. WLN partnered with organizations including Diné C.A.R.E. and Naeva to help advocate for the program and reach this watershed moment for the Navajo Nation and our climate. Help us share the news.
