Demanding the Trump Administration Answer for Betraying Colorado’s Farmers and Ranchers

Image

What’s happening: This week, as farmers and ranchers in Colorado and across the nation struggle with rising costs stemming in part from President Trump’s tariffs, the President announced plans to quadruple the amount of beef the U.S. imports from Argentina. This decision comes after the Trump Administration spent $20 billion in taxpayer dollars in a currency swap to bail out Argentina’s economy, even while China made enormous purchases of Argentine soybeans at the expense of U.S. soybean farmers. President Trump says China has committed to buying U.S. soybeans again, but Beijing can easily reverse this decision. This is not the time to spend taxpayer dollars bailing out Argentina simply because its President is a friend of President Trump.

What I believe: Instead of ending his trade war and bringing down costs to help struggling farmers and ranchers, President Trump is risking billions of taxpayer dollars on politically driven trade with Argentina. Trump’s incoherent policies will only cause chaos in the markets, and Colorado producers will pay the price.

What I’m doing: In a Senate Finance Committee hearing this week, I spoke out against President Trump’s actions to support Argentina at the expense of Colorado producers. I also joined my Senate colleagues to urge U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer to reverse Trump’s reckless plan to import more beef from Argentina. This ridiculous policy is a betrayal of Colorado’s farmers and ranchers, and I will do everything I can to fight for them.

2. Protecting Colorado Local Media from the Destructive Nexstar-Tegna Merger

What’s happening:
In August, Nexstar Media Group announced its plans to purchase the broadcast company TEGNA for $6.2 billion. If approved, this proposed merger would create a local TV giant, granting Nexstar Media ownership of 265 stations and increasing its reach to 80% of U.S. households. This would directly violate federal law that prevents a single company from controlling television stations that collectively reach over 39% of U.S. households.

What I believe: This merger would have devastating consequences for Colorado. If approved, the deal may lead to the consolidation of local TV news stations, decrease coverage of local news, and undercut staff and resources.

What I’m doing: This week, alongside Colorado U.S. Representative Joe Neguse, I urged Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr to reject the destructive merger between Nexstar Media and TEGNA. I will use every tool at my disposal to keep pushing the FCC to reject this illegal proposal and maintain the integrity of our local media.

3. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • This week, a family in Durango was torn apart when ICE agents arrested a father and his two children on their way to school. I am outraged that what began as a peaceful protest by community members following these immigration actions led to ICE responding with physical force. In Colorado and across the country, the Trump Administration continues to arrest and detain children at what should be protected places like schools and churches. I have always said that separating families is inhumane. The Administration must grow a conscience and reverse these cruel policies now.
  • Many Coloradans will soon see their health care premiums double or triple. If you have a Connect for Health Colorado plan, you can now view plan prices for next year on the Connect for Health Colorado website. If your 2026 premiums are increasing, please share your story with my office by calling 202-224-5852 or contacting me via my website
  • This week, I joined the Senate Democratic Caucus to introduce the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act. This bill would provide funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) while the Trump Administration illegally withholds available funds. I will keep fighting to ensure that these programs remain funded for the hundreds of thousands of Coloradans who rely on them.

Demanding the Trump Administration Stop Using Hunger as a Political Weapon

Image

What’s happening: On November 1st, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits lapsed for millions of Americans for the first time in the program’s history after the Trump Administration withheld emergency funding to support the program during the Republican government shutdown.

The Trump Administration has the legal tools to release billions of dollars to continue funding SNAP during the shutdown. However, the Administration announced that it would use available funding to cover only 65% of SNAP benefits for the month of November after two federal judges ordered President Trump to continue funding SNAP. This week, President Trump threatened to illegally withhold all SNAP benefits until the shutdown ends. Following this, a judge in Rhode Island ordered President Trump to make full SNAP payments by today, November 7th; however, the Administration is appealing this decision.

SNAP is America’s largest and most effective program to fight hunger. Any disruption to SNAP benefits is devastating for the 600,000 Coloradans who depend on the program to put food on the table.

What I believe: In Colorado, county governments like Chaffee, Pitkin, Routt, and Summit are responding to the emergency President Trump has created by giving grocery store gift cards to families who have lost their SNAP benefits – but that’s not enough to offset the damage. Despite having the legal power and the funding to ensure Colorado families continue to receive their full SNAP benefits, President Trump continues to threaten to withhold or delay funding. President Trump and Republicans must stop using hunger as a political weapon, follow the law, and fully fund SNAP – immediately.

What I’m doing: This week, I spoke on the Senate floor denouncing the Trump Administration for playing politics with Coloradans’ SNAP benefits. I also introduced a resolution calling on Senate Republicans to force President Trump to immediately use all congressionally approved funding to keep families from going hungry. Last week, I joined the entire Senate Democratic Caucus to introduce the Keep SNAP and WIC Funded Act. I will continue to use every tool at my disposal to ensure that President Trump follows the law and fully funds SNAP benefits for Coloradans.

2. Fighting to Prevent Health Care Premiums from Skyrocketing for Coloradans

What’s happening:
For months, Congressional Democrats have tried to negotiate with Republicans to extend critical Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that nearly 225,000 Coloradans rely on. Republicans continue to refuse to extend this lifeline. Since open enrollment began, I have heard daily from Coloradans whose health care premiums are set to skyrocket in 2026. Working families across our state are terrified that they will no longer be able to afford their insurance coverage, and many will be forced to make the impossible choice between paying for health care and affording other basic necessities.

In Ridgway: Mark and his wife will see their premiums quadruple next year. With a history of medical issues, Mark’s family cannot live without health insurance – so they must now figure out how they will pay over $17,000 for their coverage in 2026.

In Littleton: Dave, a father of five, will see his family’s health insurance plan increase by $1,500 per month in 2026. This devastating increase is more than his family’s budget can bear, and they are now being forced to consider dropping their insurance coverage.

In Englewood: Cyndi will have to pay $1,200 more per month to keep her health care coverage in 2026. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2024, Cyndi has relied on her Connect for Health plan to get the life-saving treatment she needed. Now, she faces the impossible choice of skipping her annual appointments or paying for coverage she cannot afford.

What I’m doing: The ACA health care tax credits are critical for countless families across Colorado and the country. I will keep fighting in Washington to shine a light on this crisis and extend the tax credits Coloradans need to afford their health care. If you have seen your 2026 premiums skyrocket, please share your story with my office by calling 202-224-5852 or writing to me via my website

3. IN THE NEWS THIS WEEK

  • I joined the Colorado Democratic Congressional delegation to celebrate the Air Force’s decision to establish an Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps detachment at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. I have long worked with bipartisan Colorado colleagues to call for the establishment of this unit to train and commission future Air Force and Space Force officers. This new detachment will better serve students committed to serving our country, and will help with future recruitment.
  • This week, I demanded answers from the Trump Administration on the Department of the Interior’s order requiring U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum’s personal approval for wind and solar energy project permitting decisions. This requirement adds prohibitive red tape that is blocking affordable wind and solar electricity generation in Colorado. As a result, energy costs could increase significantly across the West.
  • I demanded that the Trump Administration stop its illegal efforts to shut down the Department of Education’s administration and enforcement of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). IDEA guarantees educational opportunities and protections for individuals with disabilities. Ending the enforcement of IDEA would reverse decades of progress in supporting equal access to education for students with disabilities.
