We've made it 40 years and to celebrate we've been fundraising to keep SORP and its membership viable into the future.

 

We are wrapping up our $40k for 40 Years campaign this Friday and need your help to get to the finishline. If you haven't donated yet, now is the time to donate! If you have donated, you can still add to your donation!

 

This campaign was designed to support scholarships and drive the innovation; this campaign is crucial in keeping the spirit and progress of our community alive. Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP) Announces New Executive Board

 

The Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals (SORP) is proud to unveil the 2024-2025 board of directors. The board members bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their respective roles, embodying SORP's dedication to promoting excellence in the outdoor recreation profession.

 

The composition of the executive board is as follows:

President: Michael Bradley, Ph.D. – Department Chair, Arkansas Tech University

Vice President: Drew Pollak-Bruce – Founder & Principal, CRP Planning + Design

Secretary: Monika Derrien, Ph.D. - Research Social Scientists, USDA Forest Service

Treasurer: Lisa Luokkala - Executive Director, Superior Hiking Trail Association

 

The remainder of the board consists of:

Anne Marshall – Recreation Resources Director, Tennessee Parks and Conservation Bureau

Bess Perry, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor, Michigan State University

Chris Zajchowski, Ph.D. – Assistant Professor, University of Idaho

Lara Jacobs, Ph.D. – Postdoctoral Researcher, Michigan State University

Dakota Anderson – Recreation Coordinator, City of Boulder Open Spaces & Mountain Parks

Glenn Haas, Ph.D. – Principal, Haas and Lovejoy Protected Area Advisors

L Fisher – Trail Policy Manager, Continental Divide Trail Coalition

Whit Patterson – Outdoor Recreation Planner, Bureau of Land Management

Michael Hill – Program Manager and Landscape Architect, USDA Forest Service

Rex Turner – Outdoor Recreation Planner, Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands

This esteemed group of professionals will lead SORP in its mission to promote the personal and professional growth of outdoor recreation professionals, provide resources and networking opportunities, and advocate for sustainable recreation practices and conservation efforts.

We invite you to join the NORC Community to access resources and recording from the 2024 NORC earlier this month. We are uploading resources and presentations as speakers share them with us. You can access the three plenary recordings:

 

Welcome and Opening

Hear from keynote Dr. Jennifer Grenz with The University of British Columbia providing an Indigenous perspective on stewardship and outdoor recreation, as well as a panel that will examine Tahoe's first ever Destination Stewardship Plan, how it was developed, and how it is being implemented.

 

Awards Luncheon

National Outdoor Recreation Conference attendees received a welcome from Nevada Lt. Governor Stavros Anthony followed by remarks from Tommy Drake, Interagency Program Manager with Recreation.gov.

 

We ended the luncheon by providing awards in the following categories to many worthy recipients: National Recreation Resource Leadership Award, Project Excellence Awards, and Individual Service Awards. We will also be presenting the Legends Award on behalf of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable.

 

Closing Luncheon

Wrapping up the conference at our Closing Luncheon, starting with a word from our sponsor Aramark Destinations followed by remarks from Meryl Harrell, Deputy Under Secretary for Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), where she works closely with the USDA Forest Service. She will be followed by keynote Gordie Blum, Director of Recreation, Heritage, and Volunteer Resources, USDA Forest Service.

Submit your session proposal for Basecamp 2024

 

The call for proposals is now open for the 2024 Basecamp Conference and Workshop in Moab, UT.

 

Hosted by the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University, Basecamp is a regional conference focused on sharing ideas and collaboratively creating a path forward for outdoor recreation management and gateway community planning in the American West. It also includes a dedicated workshop session for collaboratively addressing existing and emerging challenges on public lands and their nearby gateway communities.

 

Basecamp will have two unique conference tracks and one shared workshop session during the week. You can submit a session for one, or both, depending upon your interests and availability:

 

  • October 13-16 - Outdoor Recreation Track
  • October 16-19 - Gateway Community Track

 

Deadline for submission is June 14, 2024.
