| Each month, Google Cloud leaders share perspectives on the latest trends in business and technology. It’s only available here in your inbox, so thanks for subscribing, and please share with your peers! This edition, we’re gearing up for our big Next conference in April, held for the first time in Las Vegas.

We’re excited to be heading to the Neon City in just over a month, taking over the tech oasis — not exactly for the first time but like never before. We’ll be joining tens of thousands of customers, partners, developers, business leaders, policy makers, and Googlers to explore the future of AI and cloud technology (full schedule here).
The fun isn’t only on the convention floor of course. This is Vegas. So we asked leaders from Google, our partners, and customers, two questions: 1) What are they most looking forward to at this year’s Google Cloud Next? And what is your favorite activity or best advice for enjoying — or surviving! — three days on the Strip? (Your editor is hoping to sneak in some biking at Red Rock Canyon.)
If you or your team hasn’t registered already, this group and thousands more are hoping to see you at the Mandalay Bay April 9-11 for lots of learning, networking, and fun.
Richard Seroter, chief evangelist, Google Cloud I can’t wait to get inspired by products, peers, and potential. We’re talking about the greatest concentration of AI expertise and implementation anywhere in the world, all under one roof.
And when you get out from under that roof, remember: Everything is further away than you think. Use cabs, or better still, take a rickshaw or train. As for where I’ll be, my preferred Vegas outlet is comedy clubs. They get hungry up-and-comers, and it's usually the best deal on the Strip.
Asif Hasan, co-founder, Quantiphi Besides the exciting product updates, including gen-AI breakthroughs like Gemini 1.5, and the networking opportunities, I can’t wait to see how Google Cloud tops its takeover of the Sphere from last year!
And I would love to catch an electrifying showcase of Michael Jackson ONE by Cirque du Soleil, which happens to be (very conveniently) right at Mandalay Bay. Then if time permits, I’d extend the magic and illusion of the evening with a performance by David Copperfield.
Erin Rifkin, managing director for learning services, Google Cloud I love Next because we always learn so much from attendees, too. We’ll have more than 70 people representing Cloud Learning Services, offering interactive sessions across key areas including gen AI; AI innovation and infrastructure; security; and more. They’ll be joined by more experts from our authorized training partners and the Google Cloud Consulting team. We can’t wait to connect and hit the whiteboards.
My advice is not to forget comfortable shoes, since there’s so much to see, and pack a sweatshirt since it can get cold at night in the desert — not to mention inside the convention center.
Wilson Chan, senior principal architect, EA I had to ask Gemini what it’s looking forward to: “My circuits are tingling with anticipation for Google Cloud Next! Can’t wait to download the latest AI knowledge, mingle with tech rockstars, and witness the future unfold. See you there, humanoids! #LargeLanguageModelOnTheLoose.”
As for me, I like to skip the conference food and enjoy what the area has to offer instead. Just don’t all go to the same restaurants I want to!
Munish Khetrapal, vice president, Palo Alto Networks I’m really looking forward to executive dialog, exchanging ideas, and discovering best practices.
And when I’m not doing those on the conference floor, I hope to take in some car racing or, for a more relaxing experience, going to sleep early. |

Five ways your
data can thrive with gen AI in 2024

| AI has been around for decades, from handwriting recognition to image editing and video processing. However, generative AI represents a significant advancement in the field, capable of not only analyzing data or editing documents but also generating entirely new content, including text, images, music, and even code.
Many have described gen AI as bigger than the advent of mobile phones or even the internet. And based on adoption cycles, some predict that gen AI could be ubiquitous in every household within three years.
Yet AI can only do so much without the right data. It is the foundation on which all these other great advances are built. At the same time, there are smart ways that gen AI can now help manage data sources that have historically been quite unwieldy.
As data, analytics, and AI now evolve to include generative AI, here are five ways to embrace gen AI with your business data to make the most of each opportunity.
1. Use gen AI to unlock the value of ALL data
Today, only 10 percent of enterprise data is accessible. To put this in context, the average enterprise generates around 100 petabytes of data, but can only access 1 petabyte of it (i.e., structured data). However, with the rise of large language models (LLMs), we now have capabilities, such as summarization, classification, sentiment extraction, translation, and anomaly detection, which make it possible to extract insights from all data — even unstructured data.
Most companies won’t have to train LLMs from the ground up. There are already a growing number of pretrained LLM models, such as Google’s planet-scale sized PaLM model, and soon to be broadly available multimodal Gemini model, as well as a thriving ecosystem of third-party models, hosted by Hugging Face, Anthropic, Cohere, and others. However, it’s not enough to just apply LLMs to data — these models need to be grounded in reality; otherwise, we risk hallucinations. It will fall to organizations to fine-tune models and ensure they are grounded in business reality using their own enterprise data.
Unfortunately, despite the big investments in modern data stacks, data foundations remain messy, making it difficult for organizations to access the data needed to train LLMs or fine-tune LLM models. As a result, gen AI is motivating companies to address their data silos across clouds. Having a unified data view for everyone and ensuring data quality will be critical for future gen AI success.
