Project Newsletter: Woody Biomass Strategy

October 2024

Update 5

This project will work to develop a comprehensive woody biomass strategy for Larimer County with a focus on liability biomass management. Our goal is to further wildfire mitigation efforts, climate resilience, and the ability of our natural systems to store carbon.

Progress Snapshot

The month of September began the second iteration of woody biomass data analysis and the first review of woody biomass solutions within the evaluation framework.

Second Iteration of Woody Biomass Analysis Underway

The second iteration of our woody biomass analysis is underway. We look forward to sharing this next iteration at the end of October.

This next iteration will fine-tune estimates accounting for  accessibility due to road infrastructure, as well as details based on assumed treatment prescriptions. Recognizing that management of our forests is project and land area dependent, estimates will support a range of treatment types.

A big thanks to our team at PlanIT Geo for their continued work.

Aligning on the Evaluation Framework

The Advisory Team met to review the Evaluation Framework. To date, our research has highlighted over a dozen different solutions (whether products, technology, or methods). In the coming months, the team will work collaboratively to evaluate different strategies, considering the intersectionality and enabling factors of each solution.

Staying Engaged with Local Thought Leaders

The Woody Biomass Strategy Team has had the opportunity to present to different thought leadership groups across the state. Two recent conversations have included a detailed update to Colorado's Forest Health Council Legislative Committee, as well as the Biomass Utilization Subcommittee at the Rocky Mountain Restoration Initiative.

Next month, the team will host a virtual community-wide update. Stay tuned for an email invite in the coming weeks!

Next Up.

Research and conversations with experts continue, and at the end of October, the consultant team will be back onsite in Larimer County to visit with local sawmills and other woody biomass processors.

In addition, the team will be presenting at the Colorado Mass Timber Coalition Conference on Wednesday, October 30th! If you are interested in attending the CMTC Conference, information and registration can be found here.

Partner outreach and engagement will continue throughout this project. If you would like to connect to discuss woody biomass analysis or utilization please reach out to Alicia Blake (ali...@cambiumcarbon.com).

In some cases, the volume of woody biomass generated through wildfire mitigation or forest health treatments is unmanageable and hampers the ability to easily undertake these treatment efforts. Simultaneously, there exists various potential avenues to utilize the wood. A local, common understanding of these associated challenges is paramount to increasing the pace and scale of wildfire risk reduction.

Underscored by a belief in the power of collaboration and coordination, we believe that together can work toward a future where a resolution of this challenge is realized. Please join us in our attempt to better understand this issue locally and with nuance, and help us in our effort to develop an action-ready strategy for the way forward.
